Hey, when chamfering the edges of a cube in max, I get some strange topology

now I came across a thread on the interwebs that shows what I mean

The left one is in 3ds max, observe the topology. I have some problems with this since its not all quads, which is what I want.

now the Right is modo, and it has perfect chamfering. Observe, all quads!

now my question, is there a solid easy way, (or a plugin) to get the modo style chamfers?

There's a very good chance that I experienced MORE problems, then all the internet put together in the area of 3D. Talk about being original for once...

Ace-Angel - EdgeChEx is nice, but it does not smooth it into a nice round chamfer like the example above.

Set EdgeEx to 1 iteration, apply a TurboSmooth intop of it and and see. I personally am not a big fan or EdgeEx for the price, and the fact that I need to sometimes restart Max several times before it starts working correctly, but this the only tool we have so far that works correctly save for EdgeFinder, but that one is limited.

Yeah, this one has been annoying me for a while too. Especially since I actually feel like chamfered edges like on the right are much, much better looking than "regular" subdvision modeling using support edges and turbosmooth. Closer to the output of parametric nurbs modeling actually.

You could always use Tesselation modifier, but that doesn't help since it acts with all the polygons. Useful for cubes, but lackluster for anything else.

I just added a wishlist item for this on The Area. Everyone go on there and scream about it. Squeaky wheel time!

sweet! I won't mind paying 10 bucks to a polycounter for such a useful tool!

Which versions of max do you support? I currently use 2010 32 bit.

edit: ah sjnaps, 2011/2012 ... hmm
