Ok, here are some quick initial thumbnails, most of these are rubbish, but you never know what may become of any of them...
And some slightly bigger, better ones, probably more indicative of the general direction (but certainly not anywhere near final, and definitely subject to massive change):
These are just my quick digital scribbles, Tully has been doing some pencil sketching that we should be able to show soon, it's way better than my stuff.
I like the hunched over bug thing on the right. You can almost picture it sneaking into a base to plant explosives by crawling though the ducts and on ceilings, then just ripping its way out through walls (and intervening troops) right before the whole base goes BOOOOOOM!
Alright, MoP, I can't help myself here. I'll do a short name for each of your little thumbnails, left to right, top to bottom.
- Tech dude, he glows turquoise.
- Disco-man. True evil.
- Lord of the cell phones!
- Barrel-chest, suicide bomber.
- The Mexican. 'Nuff said.
- Priest guy, infiltrates by guilt-tripping everyone into praying for forgiveness.
- Nun-witch, rides a scythe.
- Icarus, he falls a lot.
- If Shiva was a rock star.
- Kid Rock Cupid. Seriously, that's what came to mind.
- Fat man, rolls down hallways.
- Icarus's girlfriend. She fell for him.
- The Fury
- If Klesk had sex with a radio antenna.
- Baby Cthulhu?
- Cyber-chick. Girlfriend of the Tech dude.
- Archer, her arrows are infused with the souls of orphans.
- I'm not really sure... freak-show?
- The Charmer, has a spirit snake around him at all times.
- Flag pole, has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
- Pyramid Head with his helmet off.
- Spider.
- Sperm and egg.
- Worm with a boxing glove.
That was fun.
Also, of the larger drawings, the first one is probably the most fitting, second doesn't really seem stealthy but rather.. well.. insane killing monster. Cool, but not really suitable for the compo, in my opinion.
The guy, though, I like the ways you could use the shapes for his head and underarms (some sort of translucent material that captures energy, perhaps?). Anyway, good stuff.
Haha, thanks for the listing, Noel, I might take a couple of those and run with them as full concepts at some point (though not for this contest!).
You're right about the 2nd large sketch being an "insane killing monster" thing ... I guess it could be stealthy, but it's certainly more of a monster than a character. I like the body shape and pose though, might give it a shot in my free time later this year, if I still like it.
The other guy is probably closer to what we're gonna end up with... we're currently enjoying the idea of having membranous spines around his upper body, which can fold down flat when in sneaky mode, and spring up to make his silhouette larger (like one of those frilled lizards) when he gets into a full-on fight. They could also be used as simple gliding apparatus for controlling short falls and jumps.
Seems to fit with the theme quite well, and I think is a very cool mechanic that would work well to show off in the beauty pose (ie a "stealth form" and an "attack form" render).
you better! hell, i've spent most of today telling everyone how they ought to be thumbnailing, and if they want to see a good example of a sheet of thumbnails, why, come over and take a look at the one in MoP's thread.
so MoP, you better not take down that thumbnail image, lest there be so many lost and angry souls. it'll be your fault!
what can i say but echo the enjoyment of the thumbnailing and very much looking forward to what you and Tully cook up. for dinner. to feed me, when i come to the UK. no seriously, you will make me dinner. -ahem- just... kidding? you two were easily the most synergistic collaborators of the original Dominance War, and regular co-conspirators on various compo circuits, so i have no doubt that i will be surprised and delighted, and maybe a little gassy after seeing what you have in store this year. sorry, strike that last bit, that's just the strange foreign food in my system.
Still need to add teeth/gums as a separate mesh for ZBrush (for easy sculpting - and easier rigging later when I want to make his lips peel back from the gums), and also the spines for his back and neck, obviously... still not sure quite where they're going to go or how big they'll be.
Really digging the concept now with his gear on, it was always a great concept, but this pushes him to being even more evil. I love the blade in the middle of his chest, like he can use it to cut people in half when he grabs them for a bite:) I think you guys can add blades or something to his fins, something that could cut, along with stabbing. Great start on the model base Mop, and looking forward to what you and Tully do next.
Lookin pretty mean!! The translucency in his fish head is gonna look great.... And the base mesh is sooo perfectly ready for some zbrush\ mudboxin'. Very well built... Beautiful work!!

Anyway, here's a thing I just doodled. I think it's starting to come together!
Another quicky
Really loved your entry in last DW.
Looking forward to see what your collaboration will lead to this year.
Here's a quick doodle in ArtRage, just for fun really, not concepting as such...
Gah, now I look at it again I realise how similar I just painted the chest section and head to last year's entry... stupid subconscious
hey I think you guys could do a great job of evolving elements from your character from last year
[/ QUOTE ]
totally agree I think that would be a great idea....... show how that race has evolved/been effected since the last war....
i really like the guy in the top far right corner of your
silhouette sheet, looks kinda like a pirate.
More sketches. This is getting closer to the final idea, but armour and weapons still need figuring out. The head's also changing.
He looks bad-ass, intimidating and sexy!
Keep it up!
That's the basic idea for the body plan. Still needs armour! *dashes off to work on it*
bring on the armor
DOMINATE!

Spark
Pretty awesome colour choices too.. I dig it with a shovel
Forgive the blobby horrible toes, all very WIP...
Thanks for all the responses so far!
!!!!!! loving the anatomy
