If you make art for it but don't actually play the game, you won't get half of the context for the art and the art won't be as good. (In my opinion of course)

Well, he is not wrong. People who play the game a lot are usually much more familiarized with the whole theme, lore and style, and it's a nice way to learn something while having fun. I bet that someone with 1000 hours of Dota 2 knows a lot more about the aesthetics of the game than someone who just decides they're going to make an item for the game after barely playing it
Gotta agree with Belkun, playing the game, understanding what the skills do, hearing voicelines are pretty valuable while making concepts at least.
Of course you can look everything in the wiki/internet, but you will probably not enjoy the process.
 could not agree more. I actually made it a point to learn Dota and play for a bit before I got into making items for it, and I don't think I would have been as successful if I just started pumping out items for it.
I think valve still not seriously to evolve their steam workshop. Please check out latest announcement from them regarding about positively from steam workshop.
As a proud human who has under 100 hours in the game I can safely say that while it obviously helps to play the game you make content for,at some point it becomes s a diminishing return.
It seems that I've only ever heard from humans who have hundreds, if not thousands of hours sunk into the game, which might make me, a dude who has only about a hundred hours (which is still more then 3 physical days of my life on this planet) seem at some point "inexperienced" or maybe even "unqualified" to make content(?).
I'd argue that an artist who had hundreds if not thousands of hours of time and effort put in their portfolio could easily be confused with the best of the best in the workshop, regardless of the amount of time they put into the game.
Don't get me wrong, will playing the game make you understand the content better? Yes, but I'd have to argue that a skilled and experience artist would also make you understand the content equally as well. Bottom line, everyone should just do what they love to do

I think saying yes I play some dota and expressing your opinion on game time factoring into item creation over posting a smart ass meme would have been better to begin with. :poly124:

This post does not indicate that they are not interested in evolving the platform. Watch the dev days talks. Valve is very much behind ugc, and as Steam evolves, so will ugc delivery
The only advantage i can see to having played thousands of hours is that i can idly think of concepts because I'm familiar with the heroes
but to keep everything consistent i still have to back up my concepts with research on their lore/personalities, referring back to the style guide, and understanding how things will be viewed at the angle the game is played at
which is what any "newbie" would need to do anyway

 I think this say it best. heboltz3 I don't think people are trying to say that your 100 hours makes you unqualified to make great doto items. I think that is more than enough time to understand all the mechanics you need if you are only interested in making items. After that really it is just research, and I tend to load lobby's or bot matches to see how the heroes move and how their items work, but that is still part of the research phase imo. I think we got derailed enough and we should put all this stupid shit behind us and focus on some cool dota art..... Who's with me!!!!! :poly136:
Edit: Was going to wait, but in the spirit of regaining focus, I just started a Dusa set with a co-worker of mine, just finding my shapes atm...

Take TF2 as an example, I've been a huge fan of this FPS and part of the fandom for years. You'd be surprised to see how passionate these fan artists are despite not playing for 600 hours JUST to grasp the lore. You have hardcore players that don't know jack about the story behind TF2, and the casual ones who enjoy drawing fanart in their free time.
Yes it's a plus if you're really really active in playing, however it doesn't give you any PRIVILEGE to judge other "lesser" fan artists. We should acknowledge certain individuals not keen on the gameplay BUT highly interested in the lore and characters, and vice versa.

I think you misread the comment you quoted. I was not judging anyone based on their play time, and even stated that the 100 hours mentioned was more than enough, and tried to bring focus back to making art and not comparing hours played to assests made. If I was as privileged as you think I am then i would not be working on a chen set concepted by someone who does not play dota at all

Got my first item in the store! Would be nice with some friendly votes, some crit and tips

I like the idea of the trident as opposed to the swords, that it's in the Workshop, not the store, major difference :poly142:
I repainted my Aeon Leafling set for puck
Working on alternative designs too.
Awesome!
What do you mean exactly, everyone plays dota here, we were even having a tournament but I dont know what happened to it?
Some would say I play too much Dota, if I'm not working on items for it then I am playing it :poly136:
I don't know about you, but I think a lot of the items bundled with these are just awful

I like your doto arts :poly136:

 someone please post some art!
I wear my 100% unbeaten record with pride!
(Sorry I had to :P)
Worth! gg wp
0% abandon game, you got my respect XD
And here I thought 580 games with 0% abandoned was good
haha, at least it has turned positive at this point? I wish I was at home so I could post some doto items stuffs. Lets get back in focus people!
Slark Set (Something fishy)
Since Tiny got a makeover. Some possible sets
I found a new workflow which I like so that's a plus.
Layer Order goes
-Lineart
-AO
-Shadows/Highlights
-Color
That way colors can always be change
(All up for collabs )
Whooo doto art! I can't wait to make Tiny items. For the Slark daggers, I am liking 2 and 3 the most
A real human being, and a real hero.
Meaning the others are what in this case?
I am a meat popsicle
Neanderthals
You would be surprised how many game developers out there, even at the biggest studios, don't actually play games.
If there's one thing I've learned in the past few years. Make. No. Assumptions.
You guys are severely lacking. Also, you ain't truly played dota until you play in scum hole called low priority. #dedication #research #gojira
