...but man, that owl ward is amazing. I mean it even comes with easter eggs. Several of those. In a ward. And when I get an afk abandon because I stared at it for too long ingame, I'll just use those LPQ games to stare at it some more.
edit: it was released last month? God that totally slipped past me. Shame on me.
Ok, another massive drop incomming. First off, the pudge set, to give it some extra value I put together some new animations for the set, but I kept this mainly private since, well, volvo. But, I figure to post them here anyways.
Then to change things up we decided to put together a pugna ward, Oroboros came up with the awesome idea of turning into a tenticle creature from the nether. It was a very interesting creature to animate.
The hanging animation seen in the SFM render is also planned for the loadout of the ghost, hopefully if the item is implemented it gets implemented that way considering all the other ghosts default to the run animation. To give some extra value to the item I also put together a custom ultimate animation for her.
I also put together a custom Kunkka animation for his Torrent ablity where he takes a swig from the bottle.
Once all the animation was out of the way I also put together all the SFM showcases that you've been seeing in this post and the previous, as well as the big finale one that included all of the single items in the collection.
So much stuff ! It's really remarkable how you guys maintain a very consistent and recognizable art style, and of course the animations play a good part in it. Best of luck to you for this pack !
Time or a large update, sorry if this blows up your computers.
I supose I'll start this off with the Djinn Forge Spirit I did with Robo, this was such a badass little guy to work with. And the custom particles by Drew Carrymore really push this summon so much farther, he looks so wicked ingame.
Here the Djinn running in engine with the custom particle.
He got included in a community treasure organized by Oroboroosorosrosos. Which turned out great.
Shortly after we started working on "The Summit Two" Bundle. We decided to create a courier and ward following a tundra theme. Oroboros came up with some awesome design that were a blast to animate.
That fish was so much fun to animate flopping around and everything. The portrait was an unexpected suprise with the fish flopping into frame every so often. Was really happy with how that turned out.
Afterward we put together a really cute puppy courier which we eventually called Duskie. Animating something like that was new to me, making sure there was lots of emotion in the character was my main goal.
The crazy thing about the rare idle is I wanted to see how long I could have an animation, I also couldn't decide on what to do for the animation, so in the end I decided on doing all of them combined within a idle animation. That turned into a ~50 second animation, I think in the end it really makes sure that you'll always see something new while its on the field.
The other cool thing is there are animation styles, we included two different styles, the dog can have a traditional dogtag or have a keg around his neck. In doing that I had to have two animation sets that function properally to each nextpeice. I want to expand on this more in the future, this was a little test to see if I could do it to begin with.
Finally we get to the fun ESL Bundle we discussed back at the International. ESL Approached us to discuss cosmetics bundled for their upcomming event and we really wanted to push into the summons terrority. We proposed doing a five summon bundle including a Forge Spirit, Spiderling, Beast, Treant, and Sigil.
Now the beast was something really special to me, our goal was to do something really different. Oroboros designed this really awesome two legged beast equiped with a huge tongue which was a blast to animate and play with.
It's been a wild few months, finally most of the work is done, but not all. I still have a courier in the pipe, as well as several wards for a larger commmunity project that I'm not 100% ready to announce to everyone just yet. After I get back from my trip in New York to visit family and attend ESL One NY, I get started with all of that and prepare for another hopefully large drop in a few months. Stay tuned, thanks for stopping by, and sorry if I exploded your computers. Cheers!
Thanks guys! Much appreciated. It was a busy few months. Working on summons instead of couriers and wards was a much needed change. It's always fun to work on something new and fresh!
Here comes another update! I'll start with the Ward Treasure Chest! A few months back I had the idea to do a massive colaboration with a lot of artist, I wanted to get everyone involved, and not just cherry pick the best, but have a variety of veteran workshoppers as well as some newer players. The idea is that we would put together a treasure of tweleve or so wards, where each person has a specific role, no one person could make a ward themselves, but rather people who only concept, would concept the wards, modelers would only model, and animators would only animate, making sure that everyone had a chance to participate. The Treasure of Living Foresight was the result of this project.
I animated a total of four wards in this collection. First the Jungleworm Sentinel, concepted by Arty and modeled by Sylei, this was easily one of my favorites, I absolutly fell in love with the design.
One of my favorite things was getting the idle rare to shoot the eyeball straight at the camera, it was a little tricket to get right, but the results are really cool ingame.
The next ward I worked on was the Golem Ward, concepted by Oroboros and Bounch. This one was unique because it had two styles, one for the radiant and another for the dire, the idea is that it would change based on which team you were assigned to.
The one thing I really wanted to do with this ward was having an idle rare where the wings can open, which wasn't an easy task given the 1500 poly budget on LOD1, I'm very happy I figured out a way to pull this off because I'm in love with the results.
One of the hardest things to pull off were the vines on the bottom of the ward, getting both of these two work with only one bone each was an interesting change of pace. I really enjoy working within the limiatations of Dota, it really allows you to get creative with solving problems.
The last ward was kind of last second, Oroboros was concepting the treasure icon for the collection, and while he was doing it I noticed it looks a lot like an actual ingame ward, we shared it with the group and many thought the very same thing. So we said screw it, lets throw it in as a bonus to the collection. This ward wasn't very complicated to animate, but it was fun nevertheless.

Keep up the awesomeness coming!
Those DP and Kunkka animations are ace! I'm personally not a big fan of that candle ward, though. It's a wee bit too slim and generic for my taste.

Ok, this next one has been something I've been wanting to do for a very very long time. Its a bird in a nest ward! Woody!
