created [DS2] Axe, GerardM
on 03-13-2012 04:42 AM
This is my first version of my axe I'm making for the Darksiders 2 challenge,
I am not sure about the shape so I might make another version of this one.

I am still a student so advice will be appreciated.

Hrm, I think we should take a step back real quick. First off, I think you're jumping in ahead of yourself. Your axe as it is wouldn't serve the function of an axe. It's definitely scythe-like in comparison. Secondly, it's hard to see a pull from any of the given themes. If you can go back and even write up a couple of descriptions that might give your weapon a little more meaning or some kind of character it might give you a good place to start. Thirdly, I just want to say that usually an uninspired design leads to an uninspired final product. If you want this to shine in the end you're going to have to put more effort into your design work. You seem to have a good grip of modeling so it'd be nice to even see some different iterations of your model in 3d space (even if you're just using big, abstract shapes to block it out). Point is, no good design is ever forced through. Sometimes it takes happy accidents or maybe you come back to it in a day and you see something you didn't before.

I improved my concept and made the weapon more like an axe instead of a scythe.
Maybe I created some confusion of showing a sculpted version of my weapon but that was more to sketch out a concept. I am more happy with my new shape of the axe.
It's still in the block-out state so if anyone has any tips/tricks on how to improve the shape please let me know.

I think you need to make the shapes bigger and heavier. it all looks too small and thin at the moment, also the things on the back of the axe dont look like they serve and purpose or have any interesting shape eg claw or spike or fang or skull etc

The lower (shorter) part is a part that is broken of. It was meant to be some kind of decoration with a demonic eye in the middle of the two parts. I will check how to make the shapes bigger and heavier.

I didn't like the old design so I changed it a bit, I like this one way more.
The basemesh is starting to get finished so I can start sculpting very soon.

I started with some sculpting of the weapon, I don't know which style I like the most. (Chain or Handlethings)

And another little piece sculpted, the whole thing is starting to shape up now. I will tomorrow start sculpting the blade. Please give me some feedback so I can improve my weapon.
