created 1940-50's NYC Street
on 03-07-2012 11:50 AM
Putting together a scene for the ol' portfolio. I realized that when Fall of Cybertron releases I'm going to have a ton of sci fi work in my portfolio. Although i love sci fi more than life itself, I need some variation. So to avoid that I'm going to do this scene. I had done a scene like this in college but it was horrible. I'm a huge fan of the 40's and 50' so i decided to do a 1940's ale house on a NYC street. I'm going to have some modular apartment building pieces, water towers, fire escapes, shipping trucks and just various props to get out of doing so many sci fi things.
That apartment front is of course placeholder for now. Going to start populating the scene with props for awhile. GIving myself plenty of time to finish this since I'm pretty swamped working on this sci fi short film.
Reference for the ale house entrance:

And yes...that is brody ale.

That's one well produced barrell. Great job with the materials and textures. Definitely a thread worth keeping an eye on.

Going to hit this thing with broader strokes as suggested by a friend. Finishing up the modular building kits and street work before delve into the props.
Thanks for the love guys

Really looking forward to seeing this progress!
Some nice materials you got going. I can't help but feel that the barrels are a little bit too "egg" shaped, unless you're going for a bit of a stylized touch.

Great textures! I do agree with pseudobug. I feel the base of the barrel is a little small, looks easier to tip over then it should be.
I cant wait to see the wires and flats for this

Small update. Just laying in some quick textures on the sidewalk. Going to spend more time on the actual texture work tomorrow.
Next up going to start the ale house front entrance.

Laid in the front entrance to the Ale house for placement. Going to finish up the textures tonight and start on the brick wall that houses the apartments above it.
Still deciding what i'm going to do with the left part of the scene. Not sure if i'm going to show that cross street or just show this row of stores/apartments. I'm also thinking of actually making the windows transparent so you can barely see inside the ale house. Not too much but something like reference image i posted.

This is awesome! Your wood textures came out great. As for the windows I would say make them a bit smokey/foggy to give it a nice effect. As for the left of the scene maybe make stoop on the building. Keep up the great work!

Finished the front entrance to the ale house. It just looks so bland without all of the props hah. Going to make the brick wall, decals, and windows next.
I think im not going to do a cross street and just make the final piece this row of stores and apartments. Just so i can focus my efforts on a small area and make it the best that i can.
Thanks for all the love guys!

Adjusted the saturation on the ale house entrance as well as made tileable bricks!
Going to be making the windows and fire escape next.

Looking pretty solid so far. The barrel instancing is a bit front and center now, not sure if you plan to add more textures.
A quick master mat with and a couple instances with a multiplier on the diffuse to get some darker and light barrels would break it up nicely.

would be nice to break the pavement up abit (im sure you will at some point anyways i know its a wip)
maybe a drane or manhole cover might help some guttering on the building too would be nice
