I would reckon this: Go ahead and enter the contest with that software. If Vigil is going to ask for your source art then it will have been run through licensed software before officially going in the game. Let them deal with that, not you ;)

Gotcha, thanks for clearing it up.

I'm curious but whats the reasoning behind the Facebook voting? From what I've seen a lot of contests held through Facebook have not turned out too well, it all comes down to who has the most friends/most viral entry not which is the most worthy. I would hope this is not the case with Polycount but I just wanted to voice my concern

Probably a daft question but the pommel bounding box seems to be off-centre, is this intentional? Well excited about this competition!

Noticed that, am curious about that myself.
Somewhat agree on facebook issue, I really think facebook is probably the last place to get a fair outcome. I do understand the purpose behind it, publicity and marketing and all that.
I'd trust a polycount vote over a facebook vote to come out well anyday.
BUT!! Keep in mind that there will be pre-judging, so it's not like the facebook crowd will be able to pick one that's obviously inferior to everything else. I'd expect the judges would pick the best ones, and they'd be on a fairly even plane of quality. So not really too much of an issue.

Got a question too:
if say, the axehead of your axe meets the top of the bounding box, but exceeds the base of the bounding box, is that still acceptable?

Bobo: Can we get full length images of the weapons shown for these header images?
I think it'd be great for everyone to see certain weapons in certain styles so they have some extra foundation to start from with matching art themes.
Could we also get the names of each theme these weapons are using?

May be a silly question, but concerning animations, should the backside of the weapon also be functional for violence? For back strokes and such?

I'd like to see the proxy next to death (even if it's just a proxy of death), just to see the proportions. Say I'd want to add a human skull to it, I wouldn't want it to be tiny or huge compared to an actual human.

There have been a few questions about the handle so far, but I have one more. I know the handle has to be straight, and it has to have pretty close to the same thickness...
My question is this: How much wiggle room do we have to adjust the LENGTH of the handle?

this more a request than a question, but it was said this is a two-handed weapon. Would it be possible to get a jpeg or something of Death next to the block-out? I'm having a little trouble seeing the size with the scale of each piece and it's making it hard to choose a weapon type.

This would be very helpful to get a sense of scale

Just to clarify, that item in the middle there qualifies as an axe and not a mace, right? It could kinda go either way.

Viewport renders will be fine as long as they are simply Diff, norm, Spec (Emis optional)
Facebook voting is an opportunity for the Darksider community to contribute to this comp. Vigil will choose the top three finalists.
The pommel doesn’t have to be off center but if you are going to make it asymmetrically shaped it’s better to offset towards the back rather than the front.
You can exceed the bounding box of the head in any direction. Just don’t go crazy with it.
Haiasi: Sorry, those images are all I was able to release. But I can say the themes:
Mace: KotD, Demonic, DS2 Core
Hammer: Angel, Maker, Demonic
Axe: Angel, DS2 Core, DS2 Core
The backsides of the weapons do not need to look like they do damage.
For weapon scale in relation to Death, check out this video that shows off a hammer:
Go to the 1:14 mark. Our heavy weapons are huge!
For the handle, just get as close as possible on the thickness. If it’s a little thicker, or if it has pieces that break the bounding (like wraps or bone details) it will be ok. The length of the handle can be cheated slightly but not much.
Jackablade: yes that is an Axe, It’s a bladed weapon for slashing. Maces are blunt weapons for pounding (they can still have sharp details)

During the stream you mentioned you might post a rune document on the forums somewhere (if I heard correctly). I checked the general forum's thread and this one, but didn't see it. Would you mind linking the post?

I mentioned this in the big news comments, but I'll say it again. People currently working at a game company should double check their contracts. Even though this is not for money, doing work that can have the chance to be in a different companies game is probably in conflict with a "non-compete clause" that may be in your contract. It's a shame, I love the style of these games and it would have been fun to enter.

Devoid, I assume the pro's do this stuff at home (not using company hardware and software), and you don't make money off it nor does Virgil try to steal you, so I doubt its a huge problem. But you are right, its good to inform yourself about these legal hooks, but I doubt its enforced on a contest.
edit: I have a question about the thread titles
If you want to do 2 or even 3 weapons, is it preferred to put them in one thread (of so, how should it be named)? or is it best (in order for clear thread titles) to put them in separate threads.

If you're doing more than 1 weapon, you are to create separate threads. Example, if I was making one of each (axe, mace, hammer), I'd have 3 threads that look like this
[DS2]Axe, artstream
[DS2]Mace, artstream
[DS2]Hammer, artstream
