Hey folks

Just wanting some critiques on my portfolio site layout.

Some heads up:

-The demon warrior on the front page, I'll be doing him in full 3D. The black & white concept sketch is just a place holder for now.

-3D Art section is fleshed out the most.

-I'll be putting name, email, web address on each image.

-It's no where near finished (lots of links lead to "coming soon!")

http://home.comcast.net/~acknar/index.html

Basically would like to know what you guys think about the layout?
Colors ok?
The labels on the links?
How's the loading?

Again thanks for your critiques. I'll be working on it full time in the next few months once I get my more recent artwork completed and uploaded.

I would drop the glow on the text, and put the 3d art page as a start page, we want to see your art first

I’m not a fan of standalone home pages on portfolios, just extra clicking to do. The font on the buttons all seems a different size I’d suggest having a standard size across all of them. And maybe you should present all your pieces of work in a similar style, the way you presented the space marine was best I think.

Pretty good overall.
But my advice, don't make any more porn elves and other extremely cliche anime-like characters. Check out this article covering the common portfolio mistakes: http://www.gamecareerguide.com/featu..._portfolio.php

Yes yes, keep the comments coming. I'll be working on it in the coming months and your coments are invaluable.

@Alphavader: Yeah, its because I'm using MS Word... and I've been fighting with it as it screws up my images. You can't imagine

-Will be using a different HTML editor

@Alex3D: Definately. Most of those are my older work.

-I'll be moving those down or removing them as I complete my more recent work.

Also they share a common base mesh that I've always hated (I put it together in peices over the course of several months). Therefor they do not show my meticulous care for edge flow, topology, and edge loop knowledge.

@Chriss: Yes definately 100%. Again older content I quickly put up. When portfolio is finished all the artwork and 3D renders I'll be presenting them with correct lighting and like the Space Marine.

@Stromberg90: Hrm, kill the glow? Won't it be hard to see? Will experiment.

3D Art page as the main page, got it. Will change that around.

Again thanks a ton for the critiques folks. Any others always welcomed!

Well I would kill the glow and maybe make the background lighter.

is it just me or do the nav links at the bottom switch locations depending on the page im on? might wanna check that. I would also suggest dumping the "home" page and just have the index be the 3d art page. - oh ... that was mentioned.

BluPanda, I dont think that the links move but they "disappear" when you click on "3d art" then the 3d art link disappears for the page you were just on.

I also agree that the glow should go. I would suggest either making the background lighter OR if you like the black make the font lighter and darken the background. White does not look bad against a black or gray background.

I would also just get rid of the main page and replace it with the 3d art page.

I am also confused as to why there are so many different texture maps on your characters. I am not the expert on this stuff but it seems like the character should have 1 texture sheet and then maybe another one for accessories (removable armor, jetpack, sheild) stuff like that that he would not always have on.

You are correct for some assets. Particularly FPS's, Strategy games and so on where there typically is no requirement for the character to have switchable components (lower, upper torso, different heads, hair and so on).

Most of my older stuff I was putting it together as if it was for an MMO. Where as my future stuff will be like you said, a single texture (such as the Demon cheerleader).

Will kill the glow and move the 3D art into the main page.

In the coming months I'll be replacing some of my older work that's on there now with newer next-gen stuff.

Also gonna rebuild it using a better HTML WYSIWYG editor. MS Word is awful...

I can't edit anything since I'm in florida right now...

Again thanks for the help guys!

You might want to be a 'character artist' but I would ditch that subtitle altogether. Potential employer's want artists with a diverse set of skills who're not only specialized but also willing to go above and beyond, ie step outside their comfort zone. As you know this is a diverse ever changing industry and you have to dabble in abit of everything to keep up. Putting up a wall immediately like 'character artists' could deter some potential work.

Try dropping the Home-page and let the 3D art-page be the first thing your visitor sees.
