created [MUTANT] Water Polo, JGcount
on 11-28-2011 05:30 AM
Think I am in on this.
As title states, sport will be water polo. I'm thinking somekind of macho squid mutant wearing tights - with a bit of lobster in there somewhere. If possible, I'll try and aim for some 80's feel as well.
Here's some of the images I've been looking at:
Quick sketch:

This was done just to quickly give myself a visual idea before starting to Zbrush. I expect things to change - especially the face.
And something to get in the mood for water, tentacles...and modern 80's:

Okay, so got started on the sculpt(felt handicapped after a 6month break from zBrush). Decided to make the head more humanoid to add contrast and make it more like a mutant than a sea monster. Still very WIP'y:

Done'ish on the high poly, but I really would love to get some asymmetry in on this guy. Leaving that to the diffuse is an option, but any suggestions are welcome,
The second set of arms are gonna share UVs with the main set of arms, so thats why they arent really sculpted at all.

Not sure when the deadline is, but aiming for 31st. Made a lopoly, baked and started texturing. Here is a screen of where I am. Things todo:
Add texture/iregularities to the shell parts, work more on arms and lower body, add chest hair. Any crits and comments are welcome.

He looks super fun!
I didn´t like the first images at the beginning, but I guess I didn´t understand your design.
What is that around his neck and shoulders? Some kind of protection? Or like giant scales?
It looks like some soft armor. If yes I would suggest a different color and team details like number, strips, etc.

Thanks for being honest, Fabio. Yeah I guess the design is a bit weird. The armor thing is supposed to look like crab/lobster ish shell. You're right, I need to work more on that to make it read well. Thanks

Think I achieved a better look with the shell part now, and everything is textured as well. Chest hair and everything. Also posed him.
I have a bit of space on my uv, but unsure if it is enough for a small podium. I'll see what I can do with it.
he is just under 2500tris right now, not counting the ball which gets him to 2700
C&C appreciated.

EDIT: Btw, I am experiencing an annoying problem in Marmoset(which I am rendering this in and have used many times before without this problem) that I was hoping someone knew the answer to: Depending on distance, the specularity from the eye balls shine through the eyelids, making his eye very white and bright from the shown range. Halp?

Only crit would be that the inside of the tentacles (pink part) almost feels like it's glowing atm.
