Hi.

I feel like it's time to post this and get some feedback... been staring at it too long. I learned a lot so far and plan on writing a sort of post mortem of what I discovered working on this dude after I finish.

//Edit - Final

//End Edit

Zbrush sculpt...

Rough lighting render in Marmoset - coming in just over 15k tris which is a bit high but I think I can prune it down some more.

I'm pretty beginner level when it comes to character art, due to getting environment jobs most of my career. Also being a Jack of All trades contractor dude I never really get personal projects done but I do hope to change that this year. My goal is to share everything I can without reservation and refine my process as I go.

By and large I don't feel that confident with what I'm doing but I do feel I'm getting closer to a nice process and I'll do what I can to share it all.

Diffuse so far... haven't done much work on the spec yet..

Big thanks to OnelungLewis for showing his project steps HERE and in waywo - helped me out a few times just to peek at them.

Any feedback would be great, things you dont like or would change, fresh ideas on what to do? etc.

Thank you!

Great work, I'd say that the glasses needs more love, and what's up with the bullet-belt? alpha? you could probably add some polys, maybe to the wrist chain as well. Other than that it's looking great!

Heya thanks for taking a look. I'll do a texture pass on the glasses. Yeah the bullet belt is all Alpha, I thought I could pull it off but I'm seeing now A. it's too flat B. It's too small maybe? Like too visually repetitive.

Thanks for the input.

i like this a lot. I think you could stand to lighten up his face right now it's contrasting too much with his other skin(belly, arms)IMO

turned out really cool looking... the only thing I do not like is the diffuse of the head... looks really dark BTw in what did you make the first render of the sculpt... Is it directly from Zbrush? If so can you tell me how you achieved that... it looks really sweeet

Solid solid solid. Agree with Chrisradsby bout those glasses. Also, it seems like some parts of the textured model are receiving cast shadows and others aren't, and this really confuses the eye. I'm thinking mainly of how the jacket casts a pretty definitive shadow on the belly, but not the bullet belt or the necklace.

But really solid though man. Great sculpt.

@Dan! - Thanks! I hope I tweaked them closer with this pass.
@Ssandu_C - Thanks! Yeah the first render is a custom matcap a friend provided me that resembles a basic phong shader. Then I did a BPR render, super easy using Zbrushes powerful renderer.
@Konstruct - Thanks man I totally agree that would be super fun, dibs on Casey Jones! Thanks for the props keeps my energy up.
@Jungsik - Thank you!
@michael_Curtiss - Thank you sir, trying to address those glasses purple is a hard color to work with Trying to address the lighting in marmoset, not super familiar with the program just yet.

Trying out some geometry for the bullet belt. And made some notes for things I want to address. BUT I think its time to take a Skyrim break for tonight woo!

I hate T-Pose... Still need to do a broad spec pass and touch on the hands... minor things here and there. Main thing I'm struggling with is presentation :/ image/video compression sucks to deal with.

My goal is to output an interactive portfolio on Ipad... which sounds crazy no that I type it... maybe just a video at ipad resolution haha.

Nostalgia crit for over 9000. Great choice, nice render, good style.
I wish I could be more "critiqueful" in this, but I am too much a fan of old school rehashings.

@wester - Thanks man, I'm a big fan of your stuff!
@Dan! - I have to force myself to be finished... gotta move on right? thanks for the support.
@Jessica Dinh - Thanks! Learned a ton.
@limewax - thank you sir, it's weird most of my memories are about the toys and video games not the cartoon.
@conte - cheers bud thanks
@JoshC - Great compliment I felt the same while working on it and looking thru the reference.
@novalin - !

Here's a finalish. Art asset is done, going to make some more slides, presentation video and breakout stuff to be shown on an ipad at gdc but yeah... Going to do a post mortem google doc asap so I'll link to that and maybe you can get insight to my process and how I'm looking to improve it.

The little pixel dudes from I think the snes game will be for navigation in the end.

There's a lot of good detail around the eyes, I wonder if you'll show with the glasses off in any part of your presentation?

Love the vanilla ice detail btw
