I get a notion that some people think that 'hand-painted' equals being sloppy and inaccurate.

You can call it whatever you want. I'm merely pointing out the fact that hand-painted or not, you should at least try to do it well.

What you've got up there, technically is hand-painted, yes, but it's the results that matter. Not the process.

I'm not trying to be harsh. Clearly you're learning this stuff, and you probably need to understand that there is no shortcuts to get this stuff (or any other) right. You can copy/paste/rotate/crop to speed things up, but you still need to finish it properly.

That is not harsh, it's really helpful. i will keep that all in mind. thank you. i also made the one tile like you said then just copy/rotate and so on just to see how it would look, obviously that's bad, good to know

Copying and rotating stuff by itself isnt bad. But when it's obvious thats what was done? Then its a problem. But linkov is right. your example feel rushed and sloppy. I can't tell how the scratches were made and in what kind of surface, theres no consistent lighting to tell me. and the edges between the tiles themselves is just scribbbles

Some of mine I was working on for BigPoint, before getting my job at Timegate. The majority are incomplete. Not sure if I'll finish them or not.

Are you looking for environment textures only, or also character textures?

Ok then, here's the texture that I consider my best, although I made it quite some time ago.

It's shown at actual size, and also painted at that size. I was going for a Quake 3 kinda style, but I still haven't been able to quite get there. I'm certainly no Kenneth Scott!

IMHO, the character textures in Quake 3 should be required studying for anyone looking to do hand-painted diffuse only characters. In fact, I'd say it's worth getting just to break open the game files and look at the texture flats! It's cheap these days anyways.

Hmm, recently I have noticed that "hand painted" = WOW/Torchlight art style. Why is that?
Most textures are hand painted in a way or another aren't they?
Feels like I've missed something...

DemonPrincess model and texture looks fantastic!

I totally agree that hand-painted doesn't necessarily have to mean stylized and with heavy brush strokes. It can be very polished and realistic, as well.

As for hand-painted vs. other texture techniques, some texture styles these days seem to rely very heavily on photo-compositing techniques. But yeah, any good texture incorporates a lot of custom work regardless, you can't just slap a photo on it an call it done.
