created Mikala, Hand painted texture character
on 09-29-2011 07:44 AM
Hi !
This is a character I recently finished for a freelance commission. It is based on an provided concept, after some discussions with the client, I modified some bits here and there.
-Hand painted Diffuse, 100% unlit. 1024x1024. Screenshots directly taken from maya viewport
-Polycount: 5190 tris for everything.
-Done in Maya and Photoshop CS4 3d painting function
Original Concept:
I wanted to thanks slipgatescentral for his tutorial videos, they helped me a lot to figure out how to paint textures.
Comments and crits are welcome !

looks good!
i think your leather could use a bit more surface-type definition. right now it's very flat, and i assume it's leather mainly because it's brown. i'd like to see the same amount of attention paid to it as the satin.
the shadows on the white stockings seem a bit harsh.
love the freckles

love it. The leather does seam somewhat flat like it is unfinished compared to the rest of the model. Some of the shadows on the stockings seem to be grey where they should be a darker more saturated color perhaps? I would love to see this rigged and posed though. It has so much character standing still, imagine what it would have with some action to it!

Really nice job. Push the leather more like Sectaurs said. Otherwise it's reading well.

I think the hair from the concept suits her better.

Thanks a lot guys !
Thanks again for the crits !
-So what do you guys suggest to improve the leather ? maybe painting some wrinkles between the sews I don't know.I did try to put some overlay texture but it was looking grainy, not that good and more "realistic" than intended...
-I was quite satisfied with the stockings, but the shadow could be lighten up a bit probably.
-About the hair, I was thinking it could be improved If I spent more times modelling some hair streaks by streaks instead of using alpha. But since it's under the helmet I've just finish them up.
Cheers,

I love it. I like the level of detail in the texture and the art style choice. I have a soft spot for anime/cartoon kind of artwork.

Her dress turned out awesome. Especially considering that it's essentially flat geometry. For the leather, try increasing the specular hits. Leather is pretty shiny unless its very old and worn.

That's really nice. I think the leather could use some more hue variation. 5k triangles is a decent amount, and I think you could have put more into the skirt to help create the skirt ruffling. I would have personally modeled less of the small details and extrusions you have, but it looks great anyway though.

I agree with Haikai, the leather is lacking a bit, and I would say the skin part are also missing a litle something, a bit too dodge and burn, i would paint in a bit more with color there to achieve an even better work..
But still, I really enjoy looking at this, and makes me want to do (ahaha) personnal art again!
Goodwork, hope to see more of your art in the future!
