I was reading this book called 3ds Max Modeling for Games Second Edition

in this book author talks about ref. mesh to compare scene.

So it was

"As I have already started the scene that this object is designed for, I can import
some reference meshes to compare it against. The general rule for the scene is
that a 5 m2 will use a 1024

5 square meters. the idea is to have uniform texel density, which means that every x square meter gets y amount of texture. in this case he's advocating you to import a cube that's 5 m2, with a 1024 texture covering every side of it, and use that to make sure the rest of your scene has about as much texture resolution as that cube.
