New to max, need tips.

Howdy polycount users,

Iv been using max for about 4 months mostly for animation work and im struggling in creating things like guns. Im fine with creating pilliars, lamps, knives but when it comes to guns i look like a person who has just picked up max and the quality is uber poor.

I was wondering if there are any tips for correctly doing this item

This is a start and im greatly struggling with the handle to the second base.
I would just like to know your approach to crafting this in max:

Other thing id like to know:

Q:What is your approach to adding details(Cut in the details, Overlap as seperate mesh etc)

Q: Better way to rounding edges then to simply chamfer them ?

Thanks greatly for any information i admit i'm a novice but id hope to change that
