created Sketchbook: Alemja
on 01-17-2011 12:19 PM
I figured it was about time I created a sketchbook to improve in multiple areas and post some stuff I'm working on. I plan on updating about every week.
To start off my sketchbook, some hand-painted textures.
I find that when I paint stuff I have a hard time getting things to look like the material they are supposed to be, even when using reference. So it's something I really need to work on.

Just a concept I'm working on to try and get a better feel for lighting, since I'm kind of shoddy at that too. Anatomy/Posing practice never hurts too!
Comments and Critiques are always appreciated.

The textures are really good, but a bit messy. The concept would get a better light if you used a more soft brush, and maybe try to use "Transfer" (If your a phoshop user that is)
Good job, keep it up.

Waooo no, don't use soft brush! I totally digg your style! But yeah, what I meant earlier - my personal opinion, don't use the airbrush. I've seen many pieces of art being destroyed with an airbrush. Keep it up dude!

Thanks for the bits of feedback and encouragement guys!
Yeah working cleaner is also something that I also need to work on. Less scribbles more actual shapes!
Thankfully I know to use soft brushes in moderation, It never looks good when you use them for the entire piece, in my experience anyway.
Must keep making art!

Wow, you are super talented! For whatever reason your "cliff face" is mindblowing to me.

Felt like posting an update of this still is not quite done but I like how it is turning out so far. I'm hoping to get it done soon so I can focus some of my efforts back on 3d.
EDIT: Finished version is here

Something I've been wanting to do is remake an old character I created a long time ago to practice some low poly stuff under 1000tris.
Some progress so far
Here's the old (very VERY old) concept I did of it a long time ago which is more for a point of reference in case people where interested in what it's kind of supposed to look like.
Something a little fun and silly to distract me from scanning in real sketches.

A quick concept portrait I did for a character I'm working on. Trying to base everything around a single color (the color of the hair mostly)

Raising my sketchbook from the dead a bit with some fanart I've been working on at an attempt to improve my concepting skills a bit. this was planned to be a concept for a sculpt I was going to work on before the ArenaNet art test came along, and now I think I'm Guild Wars'd out a bit.

Hey, this is cool stuff in here! Would love to see more 2d posts a lot more often, and i dig the low res textures a lot.
Crit wise i'd expect to see some bolder definition of forms and planes in your paintings -- the shadows are all a bit pillowy and nondescript.

Thanks SupRore, it's nice to have encouragement every once in a while. I see what you mean about my forms and shadows I always have a trouble with those and material definition; it's something I really need to work on. I'm thinking about putting more focus into it since it can only help in the long run.

Worked on a quick anatomy study, also trying to work on lighting a bit.

Trying to clear out my WIP folder before the end of the year, I has a lot of portraits laying around so I figured I'd compile them all into a collage sort of thing. I tried to give every one a different color/lighting scheme and I obviously spent some more time on some of them, but as an exercise I'm just happy to get stuff out of the way.

Thanks Zeldrak, I had a lot of them laying around so I figured it would be a good opportunity to work on lighting, which I've always kind of struggled with.
Trying to finish a sculpt I started quite some time ago, right now the dreads are giving me the biggest problem, although there are other areas that still need some work.

Looking neato. Very natural forms. I'd love to see this one finished.

They are scars, I'm going for a tribal vibe. Scarification is still popular among African tribes since tattoos don't work as well on dark skin.

The face and hair is looking really nice but i would suggest getting the rest of the proportions and body down before adding the surface detail.

It's a little inefficient but re-doing the scars isn't that big of a deal, is there anything in particular that stands out? I only really plan on doing it as a bust.

the dreads are lookin' nice, but maybe you should tone down the scars a bit, maybe add them as specular rather than have it too big might be more subtle and still look cool.

since it is just a bust no worries on that then, the scars just look too uniform at the moment, unless they were machine cut there would be a verity of depth/sizes

A few things I had sitting around, I figured I should just put them up here, it's kind of nice to draw something other than characters every once in a while. Sadly I'm not going to be finishing my bust anytime soon, other projects are taking priority, someday I will.
