created Another one of these... community challenge - Low polys!
on 01-14-2011 12:50 PM
So... I see alot of these community challenges X vs Y vs ... and they are all for next gen game models.... Soooooooooooo.... i thought, why not make one for low poly models!
Here is my challenge for anybody who is interesting
Subject: F-Zero
The subject matter of this little challenge will be F-Zero! You have a choice of things to choose from! (im generous like that) feel free to do more than 1!:
F-Zero Vehicle:
http://fzero.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Vehicles
F-Zero Pilot:
http://fzero.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Pilots
F-Zero Location:
http://fzero.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_F-Zero_locations
Rules:
- No more than 500 triangles
- 128x128 texture size (maybe 256x256 for locations? suggest please)
- Standard lowpoly render rules, see here: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51622
- You can choose to model an existing F-Zero Vehicle, Pilot or Location OR Make up your own!
- Have fun!:o

This is by no means a competition, like the other threads similar to this one, it is a skill building activity to have some fun with!

Hahah, omg. When I started learning how to model and texture, what helped me a bunch was doing all of the vehicles from F-zero GX. I had to unlock all of them first and use the menu to view the models from all angles and get the vertex points down just right.
Craning my head 120 degrees every 5 seconds to see the television was a super hassle. And after all that, to think I lost all of the files. Tsk tsk.
Wish participation was an option atm. I'd do James McCloud or Bunny Flash. : D

Finishing up original projects that were all about 40 percent done. I've had ADD the past year, and have been doing silly things that don't relate to my career path, I.E. programming a bicycle to handle properly in a first person shooter. Time to do some more art! : D

Holy crap, this is the kind of challenge PERFECT for me! :O
I modeled some lowpoly ships some time ago, but I'm not happy with them. So, I'm going to model something new. I'll definitely partecipate!

This is what I did some time ago:
I'm not going to partecipate to the challenge with these!
First five ships were made for an NDS commercial game. Unfortunately, no publisher were interested in this game, so everything was thrown in the trash can. This was a pain for me...
Ships vary around 150-250 tris, with a 128*128 diffuse map.
Last two ships was a personal experiment! My objective was to use a maximum of 100 triangles and a texture size of only 64*64. Well, the experiment succeded!
They count respectively 92 tris (green-white ship) and 78 tris (crimson-yellow ship), both with 64*64 diffuse.

@Josh, this was? :o did not know that! no harm in letting people have another play with the style though.. right?
@Mr_Drayton, those are all really nice! good use of texture space... seems i still have much to learn when it comes to tiny texturing xD should be nice to see what you can make from 500 tris!

I might have to participate :P My hands are itching for some F-Zero tastiness. Guess I'll go the easy way out and model the Blue Falcon instead of getting into my own designs, for starters anyway.

Super Happy Cow: Remember McCloud, when I said I was going to model you last?
James McCloud: That's right, Happy! You did!
Super Happy Cow: I lied.
James McCloud: Wuaahauawuauaaaaaaaaaaa!
Could one of you get me some reference for the Little-Wyvern from the rear? Don't have a Gamecube anymore so I can't just pop open GX to see.

99.9 percent of that video covers up exactly what I hoped to see. : P
The .1 percent that doesn't is extremely blurry. : P
I was hoping for a quick screencap from someone who has the game, but don't bother yourself with it too much if it's a hassle.

My GC is not plugged in I could plug my vidcapture card in and get you that screenshot, but that would take a moment. (if the card works anymore)
Edit : my machine refused to boot up with the card installed...
