Apparently the team behind the Wii homebrew channel have figured out basically the entire PS3 security system (which Sony seems to have botched pretty bad), and today did a panel on the technical aspects of it.

While as this is great news for anyone who's interested in Linux on ps3 or homebrew, it also means (I think) that piracy is going to now become unstoppable on the it.

Piracy for the PS3 has been there, it's just that there was very little being done to implement it because of the discs. It's just always been too expensive to burn blu-ray discs for PS3 backups. Unlike the 360, which uses just regular DVDs. That's why it's so easy to hack and pirate 360 games, but there's very little (or none?) of that going on for the PS3.

I find it ironic that they started really to hack the PS3 once Sony removed "otherOS" from it.

Very fascinating. I admire their effort to break the PS3 and I take it this can be used for both good and evil?

I really hope this means a Boxee or XBMC port to PS3!
I would LOOOVE to have those on my PS3.

Absolutely, and I'm sure it'll be a bit of both.

The more games shift to online the more that is lost over time. Game patches, game servers, dlc, etc. , these are all things that once this gen is over will no longer exist if the hackers don't intervene. On the PS3 even demos are time limited before they're removed from the store.

Many people only see it as a means to get free stuff, but for legitimate customers these sorts of things have many practical uses as well.

I'm not sure how necessary this is for the PS3. I've been using my PS3 for years and I've never really felt that the feature set was lacking. (as I did with my Wii, XBox 360, and PSP) The PS3 is already pretty permissive about getting media on it and playing it however you please. (built-in support for Xvid, mp3, etc...) I can't really see any use for this cracking that I would want to use.

It would be great if this opened up more indie development for the PS3. But it would be a whole lot better if Sony opened the platform for that themselves. (as Microsoft did for the 360 with XNA) The only thing we can be certain of is that this will DEFINITELY draw some manner of response from Sony.

Not that I'd ever hack my consoles or anything but I really wish they'd drop the save lock that the PS3 utilizes on some games. I get it, it's to stop cheating on online games but then what am I going to do when I have to wipe my PS3 and my high level characters in Demon's Souls are gone? Play again...yeah I might do
