Hello everyone,

I'm going to post my current class project for critique and personal motivation. Being my first car, my goal with this project is to built a highpoly, learn presentation techniques in mental ray, and then turn it into a current-gen asset, which may be done at a later date.

Anybody who is gracious enough, please, rip it to shreds as I post updates - I'm not an auto junkie, and I expect to make my mistakes. Thanks!

EDIT: Current Final Model

its too bad u dont seem to plan to take any artistic liberties with the car design. We already know u can model it pretty precisely. Its what creative ideas you can come up with that really interests me.

YES. Finally, someone modeling a nice car and actually paying attention to accuracy. It looks brilliant so far, keep it up.

Hey this is nice for a first attempt. The only thing I see straight away is that you need to watch out by not modeling the separate panels as a single object; your wireframe isn't matching up everywhere (at the back) and this could lead to problems with surface continuity.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate the time. I've discovered that there is absolutely no way I'll have this finished in time for class deadline in a week, but I'm going to turn this into finished asset, place it in a little environment, and do it right.

Laurens, thanks a bunch - I did my first high poly model over the summer (an m1917 revolver) while going through your hotrod tutorial on cgtuts, and it was incredibly clear and helpful. That's specifically why I challenged myself with a car of this type, and I refer back to it often when I'm wondering how similar parts were done.

I've been modeling all day, so I threw everything into one of my render scenes to grab a couple beauty shots. I'll try to update regularly as I work on this.

Hey Raz, that's really nice to hear man, will make it even cooler to see this evolve, as I've never really seen anybody directly apply the Hot Rod tutorial for a project.

Well, its due in 4 hrs and I'm not even close to having it done. I'm committed on working through break on it though. Not a huge update - but the front is about all done and soon I'll be taking some parts into zbrush for detailing.

Just about done with zbrush passes, then I'm going to finish up with the interior, after whence I shall likely render out some beauty shots and get started on the low poly.

Here is a quick composition test for the scene I'm planning on setting up.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the sculpted Bentley ornament. The rest looks fine.

really nice modeling and rendering. The composition of the last pic should be way more dynamic to give the piece justice

Thanks gentlemen!

I can't say I'm happy with the hood ornament either. While I love realism, I tend to get obsessed with detail, and lately it's been starting to keep me from finishing projects. That's a professional weakness, and I'm really trying to start get faster at analyzing where I can let things slide.

I figured that it's such a tiny part of the car and will barely be visible, and after a bake and a chrome-ish material, it will look ok.

Jaw-dropping. I also don't understand! What kind of class requires such beauty from students? Such a class, you should be teaching!

Really digging these renders, what set up are you using within mental ray?

Good stuff.

@ Mr. Bear: For Most of the rendering being done, I used Jeff Pattons setup in his Gnomon Vehicle Rendering tutorial. It's primarily photometric lights set to display as rectangles, which then reflect in the A&D Materials. No Final Gather or GI, though I composited and AO pass into the final result right here.

Here is the (mostly) final model, with some beauty renders that I couldn't resist doing.
