created 1936 Bentley 3.5lt Tourer (WIP)
on 11-27-2010 07:54 PM
Hello everyone,
I'm going to post my current class project for critique and personal motivation. Being my first car, my goal with this project is to built a highpoly, learn presentation techniques in mental ray, and then turn it into a current-gen asset, which may be done at a later date.
Anybody who is gracious enough, please, rip it to shreds as I post updates - I'm not an auto junkie, and I expect to make my mistakes. Thanks!
EDIT: Current Final Model

mmm this is going to be a fun one, theres some great shapes to play with on those old cars, much more interesting than all this refined space age crap thats being made today

its too bad u dont seem to plan to take any artistic liberties with the car design. We already know u can model it pretty precisely. Its what creative ideas you can come up with that really interests me.

YES. Finally, someone modeling a nice car and actually paying attention to accuracy. It looks brilliant so far, keep it up.

Hey this is nice for a first attempt. The only thing I see straight away is that you need to watch out by not modeling the separate panels as a single object; your wireframe isn't matching up everywhere (at the back) and this could lead to problems with surface continuity.

I would turn into a pimp wagon, golden rims, pink leather couches.

Hey Raz, that's really nice to hear man, will make it even cooler to see this evolve, as I've never really seen anybody directly apply the Hot Rod tutorial for a project.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the sculpted Bentley ornament. The rest looks fine.

really nice modeling and rendering. The composition of the last pic should be way more dynamic to give the piece justice

Thanks gentlemen!
I can't say I'm happy with the hood ornament either. While I love realism, I tend to get obsessed with detail, and lately it's been starting to keep me from finishing projects. That's a professional weakness, and I'm really trying to start get faster at analyzing where I can let things slide.
I figured that it's such a tiny part of the car and will barely be visible, and after a bake and a chrome-ish material, it will look ok.

Jaw-dropping. I also don't understand! What kind of class requires such beauty from students? Such a class, you should be teaching!

Really digging these renders, what set up are you using within mental ray?
Good stuff.
