If we're going with Victorian London, or some other type of European architecture ranging from the 17-19th century I'd be more interested in doing some environment work for it. I'm finishing up my first version of my portfolio, but sadly it's lacking a lot of environmental work specifically. I haven't been able to sit down and apply myself to doing some real nice level assets.

OK so lets tally things up then.
So far we're agreed upon doing an environment, specifically a Death match Map.
We need to decide upon theme then, lets throw out some suggestions take the most popular and put it to a poll?
So far we've had
Victorian era London
Future Robots VS Zombies
Medieval rodents
Jouste-Verse.
My two cents is that if we kept it to something realistic there would be less room for people to flounder around and not capture the style.
Hey maybe we could do Steam-punk Victorian London?

let's force jouste to be the AD and have him send back everything that doesn't fit
jouste's stuff is just so much closer to being proper art. if i wanted to do something realistic and gritty i would just do that. no need to do that with a bunch of creative minds that produce awesome stuff.
considering that we have a lot of people that could help out i don't see the "matching the style" as that big of a problem. everyone gets a small part and has to re-do it until it fits with what the AD decides to be "the rest".
people will either manage to fit the style and develop a good workflow for it that can then be shared or loose interest. the ones that have the workflow down should be able to pick up what the drop-outs leave behind since it's easier once the workflow is established.
just my 2 cents.

I think one of the reasons why we fail is joustes awesome art style...Its so hard to do stylized objects for some people (including me) which causes mismatching the assets art styles.I think its crucial.I felt it and lose my interest to the project. So i think we need a strict art-management...
I am not against the Joustes style i am simply drooling when i looking at this works
My opinion we should choose a concept which has realistic pattern but we can go crazy with the ideas.Just keep them in realistic style...
We can do Jousete's stuff on next projects when we have much more experience..

Agree. A plus would probably be to start out small and futile instead of hyping and meticulously plan something that we in no way are going to be able to keep alive and breed for more then two weeks.
I also think that it would be a good idea to start creating a list of everyone interested and also in what field they might be able to contribute in. Also medium of communication polycount, skype?

I'm down for either Jouste style or victorian London, although I personally think the latter would be easier to pull of correctly.

Except He's way too nice, and when people feel like they're failing, they're more likely to get frustrated and lose interest.
Since the role of AD is essentially the only leadership role I'll argue that whoever takes it on, should be well versed in 3d. Their roles will include; coming up with the base blockout, co-ordinating with the concept artist, defining the "style" in 3d and creating some kind of style guides, divvying up the assets and managing their creation.

Sooo.. Where do we take it from here?
Should somebody start a poll where we can vote or is it free for all?
Maybe make a thread about who want's to be lead/AD?

What about taking a popular setting of a book/movie/game/tv series and then changing the time period, or some element that changes the setting. But keeps the vibe and style of the thing in question.
Like...
- Lord of the Rings, but in the animal kingdom, all humans replaced with animals, etc.
- Portal in Medieval England, castles and crooked towns make up the environment, with the portal gun.
- Medieval Unreal Tournament
- Sci-fi Wizard of Oz
I don't know, but it would allow for a style to remain, but some creative freedom for the artists to play with.

are you making a new thread for style suggestions then? Also I don't know if we should do things on scottish time, its right around and before most North Americans get off work, so putting deadlines right before people can get in on them Is a little weak. Is 10 PM our time 2 am your time?, I think that would be a better time to put deadlines at in general.

I used my time because its the time I am normally on the forums. For the project it's self the deadlines will be set for a specific day not time so it wont matter what time zone you live in as long as the work is handed in on that day.
If that doesn't make any sense give me a shout...
The style thread is now open so get posting

Little late to the party, but wanted to add this bit:
Doing a smaller DM is a great idea for a start. Consider maybe (long term) doing a series of DM areas, following a similar theme. Rail shooters like time crisis come to mind..you are in a specific area for a bit of time, then move on to another. This would allow everyone to start very small scale, with the ability to tack if this works out this time.

Just looking at whats been posted here, it looks really sweet, but is it actually being made/worked on? Or is it all just airy fairy words atm? As well, I guess by DM, you mean Death Match? Because it looks really cool, and maybe you could do what (someone) posted a few pages back and integrate the models that are already floating around places like here and GA, because it means people can spend more time working on making the models, environments, and things work, rather than ending up spending all the time creating models, environments, AND mechanics. And if there's space for more, I'd love to help.

By the way, the victorian london thing was supposed to be victorian london/disney, like cycloverid's banner.
This might be hard, but if we take several pieces from a couple of different people, and them ask them to explain their process taking something realistic and representing it how they did, then maybe we can teach people to copy a style. This may crash and burn, but it could also work quite well.

Awesome, this time I want to be in too!
It would also be fun to have two themes, one for each side. Like Team Fortress 2 has, but of course with different themes than Team Fortress 2.
It wouldn't even be necessary for the 2 themes to match up in style. We could go for a "Who framed Roger rabbit" kind of world with a cartoon-ish (Jouste) style at one side and have a Victorian London style at the other side. Of course the middle would be a mix-up of the 2 themes.
This would require an art director to make sure everything fits together.
I realize while writing this that it might be a bit to complicated for a "small" and "simple" project. But I figured I might as well throw it out there, maybe it'll get you guys to think of something awesome

If you want to have some success, the project needs to be small:
-1 map
-1 player
-1 enemy
-1 weapon
If the team can get that far, restart the cycle and you might get something that looks like an actual mod or a game.

Silly question, but what's the timeframe for this collaboration?... Weeks... months?
