created Halloween - greentooth head
on 09-21-2010 10:24 PM
Hi guys. By now you've probably seen the greentooth head mask that has been painted and modelled.
I was thinking it might be fun to make a halloween mask this year of the same, and if there's any interest I'll post the instructions of how I went about it here.
Would be great to build up a army of these heads by polycount users, and put together some kind of gallery as an ode to the 'ol Greentooth.

Well considering Halloween is actually celebrated here in Singapore (unlike Australia), I'd be keen on reppin' a Greentooth mask.

My initial feelings on how to make this mask, if last years attempt is anything to go by, are lots of gluegun sticks, a zipper, two 50cm hemispehere hollow polystyrene domes, some string (to get a perfect mouth), a large blade, some green spray (that doesn't melt polystyrene and some spray on flocking for the texture. Maybe the stuff used on model trainset landscapes.
Zipper connects the domes, so you can take it on and off without making the "entry" hole too big, and is positioned vertically on the side.
From last year:

This looks like a pretty kickass project. Now I, too, am interested in getting some of those domes. I wonder if some art and craft supply stores around here might have something like that.

I know I'll be carving a bunch of Greentooths into pumpkins, maybe I can find a green light to put in them... or just paint them green...

You might have to order them specifically, larger craft shops should stock them.
I only know about Tokyo, but they seem pretty universal.

as far as painting foam goes: you can brush down a layer of acrylic paint as a protective layer and then use standard spray paint on top. Also, I might have to make a greentooth head as well

Hawken, you shouldn't post up your awesome ideas... now every loyal polycounter will try to man up and defeat you... a daunting task... many will rise... many will fall... i told my wife i was gonna give this awesome idea a shot... she rolled her eyes and said "i'm going to bed."

$50!?!
I could buy 3-4 cases of beer for that and would last me a little longer than just a couple hours (maybe)!
What if you had some buttons that you recessed into the foam and glued in. It would make for a less prominent seam. Would need some help putting it on of course. A zipper though would reduce the likelihood of damaging the outer shell (someone else pressing against the styrofoam to secure the buttons), and would be faster for putting it on and pulling it off. I dunno... just an idea. Shit, industrial velcro with adhesive backing (still glue it to be double sure) would still do the trick and may work better than a button or a zipper. Again, just another idea. Then again... lining up the velcro would be a bitch.
Zipper ftw.

Zippers and buttons? What are we, cavemen? Magnets ftw! Great idea Hawken, not only would this be a sweet Halloween costume but I am sure it could make PC meet ups even more interesting. Keep us posted on the construction.

I'm tossing around the idea of Neodymium magnets around the rim of one half and washers in the other, you can get a 12 pack off of united nuclear for $8 link
oh yeah, I'm considering the 30" sphere which costs $85 and if I'm going to spend that much on it I might as well resin coat it so it's sturdy and will last a long time :P

This was my idea...
cylinders = magnets or slotted things.

That seems like a pretty inefficient way of doing it, Zac. Instead of having three pieces pegged or magnetized together, why not have two pieces, front and back, with some sort of hinge on one side and a latch on the other? It wouldn't necessarily have to be a real hinge, either; it could simply be a piece of cloth or flexible cardboard glued in place.
