created Emblem ideas?
on 09-02-2010 03:44 PM
I'm trying to come up with a good emblem that I can use around to sort of signify "me." I want to do a chicken head, to go along with the SasoChicken thing, but I don't want to copy Bungie's ODST/Reach rooster emblem option. Any ideas?

You might want to move away from the chicken head idea.

There are two types of artists.
A) Those that practice their signature over and over again.
B) Those that practice.
Don't be that guy with a sketchbook filled full of signatures and nothing to put it on.

Oh come on, Vig you should know me better than that. I've been working hard for a while on my carrier ship.

I think what Vig is getting at is that what matters more is your work. People will recognize you by your work and your name more than an emblem or signature. Focus on that. The fact that you created a thread specifically in regards to helping you make a signature is a sign that your priorities are going astray. This may be a back burner project to you, but creating a thread about it says otherwise.
Just sayin'

I suppose. I just didn't want to spend a whole lot of time brainstorming on it and getting a tad bit of help would make it go faster. It was merely a little idea I had, that's all. I didn't mean it as something to put on my work, just as something kind of like Greentooth for Polycount, or the fist for Bungie.
Perhaps though I should just stick with this lava-rock O. It doesn't look too bad after all...

Use the old engineer motto, K.I.S.S... Keep it simple, stupid!
Hopefully this image will show up (moved site hosts recently so this is actually an old image cache).
That's essentially my logo. I have two variants I use, that and one with a line through it instead of of a dot. It works well because it's my initials (JF) combined, and doubles for my site (studio flaagan) as the JF also reads well as an SF.
It's simple, gets the point across, and I can even draw it on top of my lunch take-out box so no-one eats my leftovers by accident.
Now, if you like your lava-O, keep it. Again, simple, easy to stamp onto things. Maybe mess around with different styles of it. I will say that until you *said* it was lava-rock, I had a hard time identifying it as that.

Really what did you think it was before? It certainly looks like lava, I thought. I've played around various times with my initials, but OB is sort of hard to combine together. You just can't really shop off parts of an O like you can with other letters...

Best idea is to avoid any 3D effect that is so common these days. It doesn't look good when printed.

Yeah, a good logo tip is that it has to look as good as a monochrome thumbnail as it will on the side of a building all snazzed up.

Honestly, on my screen it looks just like a partially filled-in glowy red ring. Even knowing what you intended it to look like, it's kinda hard to make out detail like that at that size.

Oh, I dunno...

Feel free to use any of these as a base for your own if you want.

Well, in that case: BIGGER!

Whereas the S/F logo is clearly an S and an F combined

Days spent on making a logo - Way to fucking many
Number of times my logo helped me in any slight way - 0
Looking back I realize it was the biggest waste of time ever. I would have much rather spent those days/hours learning/practicing something new and helpful.
Beyond the 3point logo I cant think of any logos that I know/remember from other artists. But much like employers I remember there work, which is all that matters.
