How would i go about making the pattern for a sweater like this? I was thinking standard brush with lazy mouse and just do them all manually but i wanted to check with you guys to make sure theres no better alternative.

How would one go about doing that? I've been wondering how to accomplish patterns like that on cloth and such.

well you could also just do it in post over the final baked normalmap, might not look 100% as good as it would when sculpted in but depending on the resolutions you handle it might very well be good enough.

un-wrap the cage as though made from a pattern (ie befor folds etc) then take into Zbrush and do your folds being carefull not to distort the uvs too much ( if your polys are nicely spaced (and square) to begin with the relax can help fix things (keep checking the texture by loading it in) if you pinch it will pinch the pattern aswell which may look ok if subtle (also depends on the cloth you are simulating

then displace
