created TF2 - Polypack - wagawagawoo
on 06-11-2010 01:07 PM
Hello, I am new to this, and I am pretty new to 3D modelling. (I have been using blender for 6 months, and I have only ever created 3 proper models, I usually create landscapes)
Here is my idea, it is probably a little lame but I have taken the Scottish element of the demo-man and ran with it!
You see, I have created a Caber Melee weapon, Scottish hat, and bagpipe grenade launcher.
What do you think?

I think you re going to have extreme trouble fitting the bag pipes to go with the default animations on the grenade launcher also with your hat he already has a heavily themed Scottish one just be careful not to it get to similar.
Concept art maybe please?

Hmmm, the images haven't appeared in the original post!
I will just link them.

http://img218.imageshack.us/i/bagpipes2.jpg/
I think you are right with fitting the animations with the default, but I could try, A bagpipe is a squishy object so it can flex to what ever shape really!
I think the hat is a little lame too, but I haven't got another idea, any suggestions? Thanks for the replies!

I am liking the bagpipes. The hat looks a little like the existing one. Maybe make something with a plume? Like the drum major in a scottish band would have.
The caber...well, frankly, it's a log. That's either going to be cool to some people or not.

Holy crap those bagpipes look badass. For the caber you could put some Scottish tartan designs poorly painted on there while Demoman was drunk.

The hat is rather mundane, how about something along the lines of a 'Feather bonnet'
http://www.scotbagpipes.com/acatalog/FeatherBonnet.jpg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feather_bonnet
I am rather scared of the idea of the feathers, Does the Source engine support alpha textures, because there is no way I could model the feathers and keep within the poly count!
Thanks, I am trying to adjust the bagpipes to have a loading hole where the reload animation goes and also have it fit the existing position of the 'nade launcher. So has anyone got the mesh or a download link to the weapons? I have the mashes and textures for all the characters but there was no weapons in the pack.
Some good news is that it is within the limits of the competition in terms of polygons.
An update will come soon! Also what about the name 'Bag O' Nades'?
Yes! Scottish graffiti (Or war paint?) would really add to the caber, as it is just a log! A crudely scribbled name along this side like 'Caber Sabre' or something along those lines!
Thanks for your input!

my god... that bag pipe grenade launcher is just lovely. EASLY my fav demoman pack.
Please call it something like black donald's bagpipes well okay that name is lame but please use some form of Scottish mythology in the name.

I'm pretty sure source supports alphas (assuming you mean transparency) but even then it might be a stretch to fit a model like that into 800 tris.
And weapon models you'll need to extract from your TF2 install - there tuts on that in the stickied help thread
Love your bagpipes

Thanks BaronVonFail, I will try and incorperate some sort of scottish/celtic mythology.
I think the hat is going to be a challenge, I may just add a rather large feather to my current hat, but I will see if I can do the epicly cool hat first!
I saw those threads, but you see I only have it on console. I think I will get it on PC for funsies and G-Mod and so I can extract the files, but if anyone has a download link for the grenade launcher it would be much appriciated!

Hello, This is the latest update, I have had A LOT of trouble trying to bring the files from TF2 to Blender, But I have had the excellent help of IRL friend Ninjai
After finally getting the game models, I have made the bagpipe fit with the original shape of the grenade launcher so it fits with current reload animations and holding position. But to me I think it has lost a lot of its charm, the shape is barely recognisable as a bagpipe, I was wondering if one of you guys could do a paint over to show me where I am going wrong with this. Thanks.

the far right pipe is floating off the main body in that render. Can we see the bag pipes on there own like away from the demo man maybe with the grenade launcher next to it for comparison.

It was a quick adjustment to make it fit the shape so there are some issues. :S
I like the original shape, but I can't see how it would be possible to make that and keep it in keeping with the game.

yea unless it got custom animations i don't see it working either. Maybe you'll be lucky and a fellow called Sparkwire will stumble across this, hes done allot of animations for people in the contest already.

What will first person look like? If the pipes aren't visible consider adding a doodad to the barrel.

I will just hope the magic Sparkwire fairy visits the page :P
Doodad sounds like a good idea! (I had to google doodad, I thought it was a technical term!) Somthing in the scottish theme too, tartan ribbon, or would that be overboard on the tartan?

A tartan ribbon would be neato, or maybe hm.
Maybe a Scottish tassel pouch (called a Sporran)?
"The Sporran (Scottish Gaelic for ' purse') is a traditional part of Scottish Highland dress. It is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless Scottish kilt."-wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sporran
He could have extra bombs or gunpowder in the pouch. Maybe sticks of dynamite sticking out.

AWESOME IDEA!
I was about to write sporran as an idea in my earlier post! but I couldn't see how that would incorporate into the design! But using it as a makeshift pouch for dynamite or grenades would be seriously cool!

Ok, So I have lost my UV texturing virginity, here is the result, It is a start, needs some tidying up at the seems and some tartan paint!
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
I have also created a doodad in the form of a Dynamite sporran!

I am sorry to pollute your forum with my nooby-ness.

That's a nice looking sporran! How are you handling the animations of the Caber? It's a little too big for the default bottle/sword animations I think.

I might have to scale it down, as I have no idea, I struggled importing the models alone.

You could have the end where he holds it whittled down into a normal handle size and have the rest be a huge log he shouldn't be able to swing because it's so comically large.
Sort of like a beaver log.
