Hello all.

Here are the current designs of my entry for the tf2 comp. The theme I'm going with is something along the lines of "backyard aviation" for the pyro.

I'm pretty nervous as I'm pretty unfamiliar with the whole comp thing, but hopefully it goes smoothly. These are still definitely works in progress but if anyone has any ideas or pointers I'd really appreciate it.

Primary- The Afterburner - Essentially a jet engine hooked up to a fuel cylinder and a frame.

Melee- Propeller/ chainsaw thingy- A propeller or fan blade banged on to an engine block.

Hat- Old style aviator hat complete with goggles and straps.

Awesome to see you posting, dawg! Great start to the modelling, however as I mentioned to you on MSN, that it's looking a little overly detailed and not quite hitting the TF2 style.

I need to redesign for some slightly more basic shapes, but have trouble making it look interesting otherwise..I've noticed that most tf2 weapons tend to be comprised of few parts. I have found another dude on here who is following pretty much the same theme with a similar hat and someone in their thread suggested a propeller melee weapon thing....goddammit. This is why I shouldn't look at other threads, ever.

It's fine if you're doing the same thing as other people. With so many people entering I doubt that any one entry will be completely unique from everyone other person's.

Anyway looks like you're off to a great start. As Emil said you need to simplify the shapes a bit in certain areas. Another suggestion I have is to condense the propellor chainsaw a lot. Right now it's looking like the entire engine with a handle on it. I think it'd be more interesting if it was made from deconstructed plane engine parts similar to the flamethrower. It'd give it that slapped together feel that a lot of the TF2 weapons have and would fit with the Pyro better I think.

Thanks Zipfinator, I will continue to redesign, hopefully leaving myself enough time to sort out the rest. The idea of an entire engine with a handle on it was pretty much what I was going for, the pyro isn't exactly the engie :P But yes, some condensing would be a good idea, thanks.

So I'm going to start again, but can't seem to find the resources to help ensure my models match up with the characters and their existing weapons. I might be a dumbass for not being able to find them but can anyone please help me out?

One of the hats I'm thinking of making is a divers helmet. Does anyone have an opinion on how affecting the silhouette in such a way would create gameplay issues or if its just a silly idea? Thank you.

I don't think it'd be an issue if you kept it relatively small.

i LOVE the propeller idea. Its the only one i've seen so far (in any thread) that i think is awsome. If it looks good enough, i hope you win!

Thanks. Seeing as how I have to cover up the collar sections of the demoman with the helmet, or some kind of attachment to it, it seems to end up being quite a large object compared to his head. Might have to think of something else for this one, though I was keen on that.

Thanks roosterMAP! It means a lot to me. Unfortunately I might not be able to use it as I will have to follow the character's animations for this comp. In a future pack perhaps?
