Lots of folks are going for old-fashioned, so you're seeing a lot of matchlock or pepperbox pistols. Let's see;

Brass knuckles for the heavy
combat knife for the soldier
some sort of boomerang for the Sniper
cannons for soldier/demo

That's just off the top of my head

well looking through the threads i haven't seen any 1950's space cadet setups.. so i'm going to go with it.

i have a hat, pistol, and misc item planned.

since there isn't a poly limit posted for misc items i put my own 300 poly limit on it.

it's sitting happily at 260 triangles

I'm with DKK here, whilst the helmet looks great, the cap+mics would be cooler and less obstructive to the silhouette.

If you're worried about silhouettes and such you could make the entire helmet bowl transparent glass with a tiny wire running down the back for the antennae (if you care about that). Then his head will be the same silhouette and easy to aim for and it's still spacey and saves you effort.

I personally think it's great the way it is.

How are you with limits on the model for the hat? Can always use more retro-futuristic doodads! The antenna on the hat could be bigger/more exaggerated (a larger bulb tip?).

You didn't spend ages on the helmet did you? Never be afraid to scrap work if it doesn't...work.

If you don't want to though, I'd suggest scaling it down a little, there is a lot of space you could lose to tighten up the silhouette.

that's the EXACT hat the other guy did and he nailed it perfectly, the best i could do is copy him, so i decided to mix and match a few ideas from other hats.

It's not that i'm afraid to scrap work, it's just that it has grown on me pretty well.. It's not really as big as you think it is. and it doesn't really damage the silhouette, if anything if would make a BIGGER target for snipers (though i can't hit the squirrelly bastards period)

Like I said, I like it, just add a more exaggerated bit to the antenna to catch the eyes- you can barely see it it's so thin in the silhouettes.

More catoony versions of antennae are usually made into shapes other than simple lines...like on Kang and Kodos from the Simpsons-

It should use the TF2 font maybe that would fix it up.

Make it the rocket/missile from dustbowl 3 and make the gold less bold, make it a TF2 shade of cream colour

I think you should replace the gold-colour with the small bands of cream/peach colour under the middle-two oranges here

Well its nice to have some direct competition with the old sci-fi type look. Keep it up.

I also wanted to get coloured character refs into 3ds max, i wasnt to sure how tho. only ever managed it on the veiw models for hands.

Have you tried putting a skylight into your scene then hitting f10 going to advance lights then putting light tracer on in that drop down box? not sure if that would edit the renders. If not play around with the render set up
