created flapping clothes
on 05-28-2010 12:35 AM
Hi I am relatively new to the cryeditor and I was wondering if there is something that could enable a cltoh flapping like I have seen in red dead redemption where lots of little flags or clothes hanging from a rope or other stuff is flapping nicely to the wind , also if also clothes could have some kind of feature that allows the wind flappering and trembling as seen on some of their main characters....

Is this forum part silent or I should post this in technical talk?

If you select the Cloth shader for the fabric parts of your mesh and enable Wind Bending under the shader generation params you cloth will react to the wind in the scene. The settings can be tweaked under Shader Params.

But how it needs to be made / tweacked in t3dsmax? Do Ineed to make any bone system or the like?
Also if the cloth part is actually a tent that is tied to a squarish wooden poles , the central part of this wall where the cloth of the tent should be will it flap or look like filled with wind etc?

If you took the time to actually go into Sandbox and throw this on something you'd realise it is a simple vertex based animation. All it does it move the verts of the model about. If you set a material ID for the wood poles and a different one for the fabric of the tent the poles won't move in the wind. You don't need to setup anything extra in Max other than material IDs.

Oh it is like the Vegetation leaves? I have done those but wasn't sure it was also for the clothes , but will it be influenced so by wind speed? Also is possible to create a wind system in a level or I have to place manually fake wind sources?

I don't know if you can make local wind sources, but for the entire level, you can set the direction and speed in the rollup bar:
And yep, they are affected by wind as shown here:

Also you can use a WindArea if you just want to effect a specific area.
Heres a tutorial for the getting cloth stuff ingame:

that tent is really cool eaglevision. Is that expensive at all to have that entire tent animating? I imagined cloth would be reserved for a Cape or a Flag, not a whole tent. Looks amazing and perhaps CE3 can this kind of simulation just fine with a lot of polys. Just wondering what the limitations are. If you had 20 of those tents would CE3 be ok FPS wise?
