Good thread, I don't know much names in this genre, but there's two lovely albuns in my playlist that maybe fit in this thread:
This one is Space Invaders by Pornophonique:
And the other one is Tour de France, by 8-bit Operators:
edited: Oh my gosh. Almost forget that. A brazilian band called MegaDriver, metal renditions of some classic game tunes:
If you like it, take a look at the links, their music are freely available to listen and download. : )

Dado: If you have this song downloaded try it in Audiosurf. Makes Through The Fire and Flames look like a cakewalk:
YTCracker made an entire album out of this sort of thing:
The Advantage is also great:
MF DOOM used samples of the ID game he shares his name with once:
Destructoid recently posted about Alex Day, who some of you might like, if nothing else the titles of his songs make the point well enough:
I'm sure somebody will bring up The Minibosses, NESkimos, various artists from OCRemix etc.

Awesome I love this stuff. I use to play bass in a game cover band. Wish I could find more musicians that did so :-O

The Black Mages! They've got some good Audiosurf fodder too.

Nah. But my brother and I are probably going to record some final fantasy stuff soon. He's a sound designer/pianist and I play bass. So it should be fun. I know just about everyone of those black mages parts :-D

There's a bunch of good stuff on the Overclocked Remix site.
ocremix.org
A lot of it is just remixes but you'll find a bunch of covers as well. The Doom and Street Fighter albums Dark Side of Phobos and Blood on the Asphalt, respectively, come highly recommended.

The Minibosses - one of the first. They've been at it for almost 10 years.

More Black Mages!
There's a lof of cool stuff on ocremix, but it can be hit and miss sometimes. Lots of cool Sonic, Megaman and SF2 tunes though. Most of these bands are cool, but for me nothing beats the Black Mages.

This is not a direct remake of some soundtrack, but nonetheless related to video games and of course a good power metal track. You'll recognize samples from tetris and super mario land.

Not a "band" per se, ok, this is a blatant midi remix :p, but a really good one (imo)...
Sonic Clang - Doom E1M5 - Sinister
btw, Bobby Prince himself has released a Doom IIV theme, as some sort of a "what I could have done with it..." protest. It has been removed since (from his website) but it's out there...
I thought Chris Vrenna did an awesome job with it, but I wish the "tracks" were longer and more playable. Who's doing Doom IV, anyone?

I just came back from PAX East and saw Anamanaguchi perform. Really fantastic show. I even bought the 12" of their album.

Sorry if I'm reposting anything but I don't have the time to go through every youtube clip in here
http://remixartistcollective.com/?p=85
There's more, but I'll have to post that later.
