Hi guys, someone had to start this, so here it is!

It still needs a lot of work, but the base shape is done. I think I'll try the floating geometry solution for nuts here and there, as the surface is fairly simple and flat to support them well. Let's see how it turns out, just a new experiment. General width will be adjusted as soon as the other pieces start to fit together.

Here is the model in .obj format.

Hey Bitmap, thanks. I'm currently having a little trouble determining the overall width. I got it from two points.

I suggest to model the barrel as soon as possible, then define the "eight-sided looking" shape where the ammo is loaded. It gives the width of the general thinner flat part, you can guess the plastic width from many photo references you already posted.

The beefy part toward the tail is a bit trickier. I got it from one of the exploded views in the manufacturer's gallery. You can see in the image a "butt pad" (the cushion where you place the shoulder) from top, so you get the height, which is the same in a side view, and its width. The rifle is slightly larger than that.

More to come soon. I hope this helps and many other join in.

Was it box modelled or polyed then a thickness modifier added?

Yes it is. The workflow have been something like this:

1. Setup the reference image plane with the full rifle side view posted in the main thread.

2. Created a plane in the side view and reproduced the silhouette plus some reinforcement edges around the whole shape and some additional lines relative to main details like the groove along the handle under the barrel.

3. Extruded the shape to the "thin width", and reworked the handle, then the details like the groove and chamfers along the upper side, where the ammo is ejected.

The images are just to get the whole shape. It is a simple surface of half rifle with a Symmetry Modifier (weld seams off), a Shell Modifier (which gives the thickness) and a TurboSmooth Modifier.

Here it is, the finished Workshop #4 - Mini Workshop #1. If I got some more time I'm going to model nuts inside the body too, then compare results from baking the two versions. Right now they are floating geometry I'd like to experiment with.

Here is the model in .obj format. Enjoy!

Awesome work man. Very inspirational. I regularly refer to your work when I come across modeling problems, especially your S&W revolver. I'm gonna get started on this workshop and try to keep up.

Hi guys, here is the final high poly model. It misses the bipod, but I plan to add it later. Sorry for the very big images, but it's the only way to show details in the wireframe without doing many renders, my PC is quite ancient and takes ages to calculate. I'll add some breakdowns of different pieces to show better how they are built. As a side note, I took these renders with a 70mm lens.

Thanks Sean, unfortunately it seems my work isn't enough to get even a job interview //end woeful mini rant :)

Awesome job man. So much control, and no skimping on the smaller complex shapes that most people cheat (which is usually fine, but I appreciate you taking it that much further). This is a film quality highres, easy.
