created Game Art Workshop - Workshop #4
on 01-14-2010 04:55 PM
Subject: Sniper weapon
Objectives: High/Low/Uv/Bake/Texture
This workshop will consist of several mini-workshops.
Don't forget.. These workshops are meant to be a learning experience.
They are not competitions. The sharing of techniques and workflows is the most important aspect of these workshops.
With that in mind, you are encouraged to share wip pics, videos that you record while modeling and OBj models at various stages of modeling.
Mini Workshop #1
Model the green stock.
We don't have a time limit yet.

Wow, the workshop sounds like fun and the reference images are awesome - Im in!
I know that you said there is no time limit... But can we at least have a rough time frame? Like, 1 week-ish, 1 month-ish, 6 months-ish?? I gotta plan my life, and all

Hey Bitmap, good to see a new workshop! Thanks for the great reference images pack. I wish to contribute with a couple of big ones extracted from manufacturer's brochures.
Get chassis and full rifle side view. Remember they are photos not blueprints.
I get the model is from the AW series, here is a link to the manufacturer, take a look at the nice brochures as well:
http://www.accuracyinternational.com/aw_series.php
Gallery is nice too, images are a bit small but a couple of exploded views can give the idea about how pieces are put together.

I'm pretty green at actual modeling something, are there any recommended learning resources I might want to read before slinging around ploys in blender? All I got right now are crates and cracker barrels.

Being a noob myself, just trying to do something I didn't really know how to do taught me a lot.
Also the various threads around polycount, like "How do you model dem shapes (sub-d)" thread has been really informative.
Racer's AK47 videos shows the process of making the small details of the guns like screws and rivets and so on using floating geometry for baking into a normal map.
I'd recommend checking those out.

This would be my first high-/lowpoly model and I found no polygon budget for the lowpoly weapon. If there is no polygon restiction defined in this contest, what would be your rule of thumb for 1st person view / 3rd person weapon?

dont worry about that at this point.
right now your only concern is about making a sweet hipoly work.
and for that you dont have a budget.

Holy crap, this is harder than slinging cubes around...
Firstly the weapon have tons of beveled curves. What is the best way to deal with those? Should I model them in or try to get subsurf to handle them? I would also like some pointers on modeling with sunken bolts.

Hi guys, after seeing the theme of this workshop I asked myself who would use it for show, as it doesn't look so powerful as a full fledged assault rifle. Yes, it is a sniper type, but, whatever, would you ever see this in a movie? I guessed not, because it isn't super fancy, as we all are used to. Well, I was wrong! Here it is, you can easily recognize it in Burn Notice season 3 episode 11. It's the foldable type, with smaller caliber. It is sexy in womanly hands after all, isn't it? ;)

Hi guys, for hose who want to start modeling the scope I found a couple of useful references. In the image pack form Demigods which Bitmap kindly provided there are two scope types. I couldn't recognize the first. The second, which in my opinion has more interesting shapes, is:
Manufacturer: Schmidt & Bender
Model: 5-25 x 56 Police Marksman II LP
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt_%26_Bender
Scope caps for both models are:
Manufacturer: Butler Creek
Model: Flip-Open Scope Covers
@ Mental Radiation: Nice finding! Those are really interesting custom models.

Thanks for the scope caps ref links! I was having trouble finding it. Also, the one you "couldn't recognize" is the one I'm attempting to do ;) Finding reference has been a task!

I originally posted this for Polygoblin.
A roommate of mine happens to have an airsoft replica of this gun (or something very similar), so I took a bunch of photos for you guys.
