Me and my friend, who hopefully will be joining shortly, are working on a game, but to be honest, we have no clue where to start as far as programming and scripting goes.
If anyone has tips or suggestions to help us start off, please post some replies. Thanks!

I've tried VisualBasic...but I'm getting nowhere with that....

Maybe ask Google as I am sure your question is way to vague and general for most people here. You forgot to mention some important things that make your post kind of lost and useless.

What game? What technology?, style, what experiences,...

Oh ok, I didn't really think about that.

3D FPS, maybe over-the-shoulder. So far using Max for modeling. I've got 2 years of mostly self-teaching in 3D, and my friend knows some programming, but not a lot. At least not enough to get a game going. Neither of us do, which is why we need some tips.

And Google's answers are often way too vague.

Go get some game programming books and learn how to know enough to get a game going. Otherwise you are going to get nowhere.

There's a decent amount of tutorials available for UT3/UDK. Or you can give the Unity engine a shot.

or get into scripting and play with either the blender game engine or the commercial Unity3d engine. Because for booth you do not have to be a super math genius or coder, just download sample files and learn from them.

Thats how I learned flash many many years ago. I think its a good step if you want to see results sometime soon.

if your friend thinks he can handle some more code heavy stuff maybe have a look at the XNA project from Microsoft (to let indie people create free content for their not free xbox live)
http://creators.xna.com/en-US/

or the Ogre3d opensource engine that has been used in plenty commercial projects and awesome indy game projects (like marshmokey's zeroGear)

Any programming books that deals with programming philosophy should do. I am also sure there are plenty game-specific programming books and tutorials. Hell, I think there's a set of tutorials on 3DBuzz that deals with game programming.

Once you are good with that, then you can take on any language and thus any engine.

Ogre is more a rendering engine. Its not a game engine in itself. Though if you do look that direction.

I would also suggest your friend join irc channels for scriptors and programmers for whatever you end up choosing. Im sure he will get flak, but may get good information realtime as well.
