I'll be working by myself and this is my first contest and I'm very new to this site and 3D in general so I hope I can finish my entry. I'll be using the CryEngine 2

A couple Ideas I have right now:

1st: The first black hole artificially created by humans in an attempt to harness wormhole technology is about to go horribly wrong, The black hole is about to reach critical mass, and break through its containment spelling doom for the entire world....

2nd: The World has been so poisoned by humans that the environment has been decimated. Global warming took over due to feedback loops and there is now almost no water left on the surface, leaving a dry and dusty place similar to mars. The Remnants humanity are leaving the planet for the last time, in a Giant world ship which will hopefully get them to a new habitable planet....

hopefully I'll get some quick concepts up tonight

your second one kind of reminds me of Titan AE. Not with the environment part, but the idea of the ship... "Were not calling it Bob!

well aside from the oversized ship they have nothign in common. The "ark ship" is a good staple to draw on though, and kinda nice for a change of "end game".

I was thinking the exact same thing!
Your concept looks very much like the start of Half-Life. It could be pure coincidence though.

I've never actually played that game as surprising as that is, only played half life 2... I might have to revise my concept a bit to differentiate it from the opening part of half life. Anyways heres a rough block in of the black hole scene and 2 fast renders just for fun

Going to try and do some a quick concept and block in for the other idea tomorrow so i can choose one and stick with it

neat, as for half life one, i rember playing that part over several times thinking i had to push the cart correctly,, but it just turns out, despite how good a scientist he is,, freeman, is a shitty cart pusher.

haha @Rhinokey

Cool idea, it's nice to see some tight interior spaces being developed rather than classic epic scale end of game sets. More manageable for a solo effort too.

Ok i've got somethings into the engine and I worked on the effect for the field surrounding the black hole. I still want to get a distortion effect around the hole similar to this

but I don't know how. So heres what I have so far in engine. Hopefully i'll get some more in later tonight.

I'm using cryengine 2. And that is a refraction shader, I messed with the fresnel but I think it looks worse with it

Looking great so far.

I'm not getting a sense of scale yet though. I'm sure that wil come when you add the small detail. Looking at your mock up, i'd also add a few more walkways around and even through the main structures. You may have this in mind anyway. Just a thought.

Keep it comng!
