created Some Halo Wars Assets (Image Heavy)
on 05-28-2009 04:59 PM
Hey Guys,
Long time no post. I thought I would finally post some of the assets I created while working on Halo Wars. Most of these are posted on my site, but a couple images aren't. It was a really fun project, and I learned a lot from it. It's a shame Ensemble had to shut it's doors.
As always with stuff like this, the art was created by me (unless otherwise noted), but is property of Microsoft and Ensemble Studios.
You also may notice some weird normal errors on any images with wireframes. That was because the normal map the engine read was slightly different from what Max reads, so there are some errors in those angles that weren't present in the final results.
UNSC Airpad
UNSC Field Armory
ODST Drop pod
UNSC Building Socket
Oni Control Tower
Oni Observation Tower
Arcadia Rail Station
Covenant Methane Refinery
Covenant Methane Storage Tank
Forerunner Hook
Forerunner Light Elevator (I do not believe this asset was in the final release)
UNSC Hawk
UNSC Base Turret
Arcadian Civilian Car

It's like xmas in here, so many cool goodies. I really love the clean chunky beauty of them all, though the building sprocket takes the gold star, really strong plane work, theres a real layered charm to the piece that many of us try to pull off but rarely does it come out as effortlessly cool as this.

Strong work. That smashed car rocks. I got to visit Ensemble and play a QC build of the game a couple of years ago and was amazed at the quality of the artwork even then. I was very sad to hear about the closing.

Thanks for all of the kind words guys, I truly appreciate it!
Salman: The majority of the assets above used One 512x512 set (Diffuse, Normal, Spec). A few of the larger ones used Two 512x512s, and smaller ones would use 128-256. It was a lot of fun and challenging to work with lower res textures. I really learned a lot from that though, that I apply to my work today on higher res textures.
nezach: Thanks man. I remember being quite impressed myself on my first day there. The art went through a lot of iterations throughout production, and each iteration was a positive change. There were certainly a talented bunch of artists at that company!

lol, this stuff looks better and higher detail than the bog standard stuff that shipped with Halo 3... Yet its an RTS. Really was let down by Halo 3's art.
Great job on these, they look stunning.
