DWIII - 3D - ArtMonkey - Warlord

I've been trolling around the Polycount forums for a while now, and with seeing all the talent here, I have decided to join. This is my first DW contest, and I am really excited about it.
I've decided to go with the Warlord class. I want my character to be a big-hulking-brute-type.
Here are my first pencil sketches (yeah, I know, who sketches with a pencil anymore?)...

I kind of know which way I want to go... I'll post more in a bit.

Nice stuff! I think I'd like #4, but with the 4 arms, like #3 and yes, definitely two huge axes!

Hey, thanks for the comments.
I do like #3 also, and I think I will develop that one for the DW III 2D contest.
For the 3D contest, I'm going with #1, and I started working on a more detailed sketch...

I scanned in my pencil sketch and worked it up a bit in Photoshop. I decided to go with a mace/sword/torch artifact that has fire/lava magic. Also, I want the War Troll to have an Aztec Sun/Fire God motiff...

Now, I'm going back to paper to tighten up my pencils

I changed his Weapon Artifact into more of a torch-like weapon. It has openings in the grates for the lava and fire to spill out of...

I tightened up the pencils, and added details. I still need to flesh out the fire totems on his back, the gauntlets, and a few other things... but I think I can do that when I add in the tones and colors in Photoshop...

Awesome drawings.

Thought about enlarging the hands/feet or having a more noticable transition from forearm/shin to hand/foot? At the moment the limbs look a bit stumpy, as does the bald head on the large neck. Though maybe that's what you're going for

, just thought it might help enhance the silhouette and help distinguish parts of him.

Added some tones and textures in Photoshop. I lost about an hours worth of work tonight because I didnt save... must remember to save more often :P Oh well, I'm friggin tired, and I'm going to sleep. Tomorrow I will start to add some color and work out some of the details on the totems, gauntlet, skin, face, etc...

I added more shading and details to the concept. Still want to re-work the torch-totems, but I might just do that in 3D. I'm working up the colors as I'm typing this and that will include the flame work too. I also started working on the 3D version (Xaltar!

), and will post some work-in-progress renders once I get a chance.

Its realy great! Ive seen this troll when i bought the game and it was one of my inspirations to start learning 3d!

BRUTAL! I love this.
The feet are probably the weakest part of your character IMO. But everything else is looking really sweet.

Hey Blackwinged, yeah I worked on LotR: War of the Ring and designed a lot of the character/creatures on that game. I wanted to do a Troll-like character for DWIII so I guess it does draw some inspiration from the trolls I designed... because.... well, I designed them

I'm glad that you found some inspiration there to start learning 3D. I'm diggin your lizard head, and I look forward to seeing how it progresses.

-Winterlord, he is from a race of Trolls. I have an idea for a backstory that I will post in a bit. I was hoping that I could enter the Troll Warlord for both the 2D and 3D DWIII contest, but the rules state that if you want to enter both you need to create a completely different character for each. Unfortunately, I dont think I am going to have the time to do that since I am going on vacation with my family for 2 weeks at the end of March... It's gonna be tight just getting this character done by the deadline.

-Levus, I like the idea of huge shoulder pads. I might do them for one of his shoulders.
The one thing that I want to really get across with him is his thick, tough, armored skin... he is just naturally protected.

-caseyjones, Thanks for you comments. I want the feet to be really thick, tree-trunk stumps with gnarled toe nails sticking out from these fat stumpy toes. Hopefully in the modeling stage I will be able to push that across more.
