One concept out of a few that still need to be scanned.

Yup Peris I agree! It definately needs to be chunkier. I think I will go on testing materials and such before actually deciding on a design.

At least I've got the name and color now!

I've got a few others I want to try stuff with, esp one that was supposed to be a simple front floater thingie ala SWEpisode1 but that I will turn into a ship of its own - thus giving a simple, blockier look. Til then I'll go on practicing 2D material rendering with the other designs I have at hand.

Vailias I never hear of Burt Rutan before but after some research I think I see what you mean. Slick stuff!

Ged, I whish I did. Still there is a ton of good starter info to grab from the Robertson and Neville Page Gnomon DVDs.

Still trying to nail down glossy materials using 2d photoshop mockups ala Neville Page.

These material studies are looking amazing, the 2d one too.
The latest glossy material is looking very sexy, even though it doesn't have that nice glow effect the first one had.

Hey Jaco they are all 2d :P Yeah the last one is less glowly/ghostly - Yet I feel it is more satisfactory as a potential carpaint. I thought the first one was looking too jelly-transparent. However the last one looks too much like ceramics with a layer of gloss on top... might need to look into that further.

Vroom!

Haha Jesse yeah, a friend passed me a few last year and I am now slowly going trough them - the shiny ball was obviously done by following Neville Page's. I thought that the Fzero challenge was a nice occasion to try the classic rendering tricks that are distilled in these discs. Also my table-mate at the office has a background in Industrial Aesthetics and is showing me how and where to place chrome horizon lines and stuff.

Hawk and Ged it's just a dirty trick :

Teri that's an Intuos. I know I will get myself a Cintiq someday but I'd love to borrow/rent a tablet PC to see how these devices handle sketching programs. Being able to tilt the document to adjust to a natural arm movement is something I miss a lot with digital mediums.

Anyways, still looking for a design I like, no success so far! Maybe I'll go for the one with a blue racecar stripe.

And still practicising the dirty shiny tricks...

sexy, although massive for a fzero racer. If I recall most ships where maybe half that size.
