i have to make a character with a maximum of 1600 tris for the the valkyrie profile challenge. my wip thread is here , no modeling yet.
i was wondering, should i build the arms and legs of 6 sided cylinders or 4 sided or how much is appropriate for a model like that?
and maybe to make the thread a bit more interesting, also for others: what polycount goes with how many sided cylinder loops usually? (on bipeds)
thanks!

can't you just try and see? I mean.. seriously, that's what most people do, there's no formula for this stuff

think about it this way....it's easier to delete than add. so if you aren't happy w/6....cut it down some.

make it look good first...then cut where you feel you can.

The required count is 1300 tris by the way, unless the rules have changed.

I also prefer to optimize instead of adding, just check the silhouette and slash thru them polys!.

hmm, I often optimise as I go.

may be the wrong way to do it.

I don't mind though.

The only thing I really consider for characters when I modeling is where I need the seams to go and then match the silhouette. I try to leave as much polys for the head as I can. I would use about 1000 tris for the body and the rest for the weapons and gear. That contest look sweet. It's best if you experiment but try six or 7 sides for the arms adn 8 for the legs. For the torso maybe 10. There really is no right way, it just has look great.

@Psych0: whoops! your right :P
@conte: nah.. i think 20 sided is a bit too low... maybe i should have a go at about .. 50?
