GAME ON!
Here's a quick thumbnail sketch I did during lunch today, it's not very much but it's a start. Wanted to post mainly to bounce around some ideas.
I'll be making a brutal alien female. Not sure on the weapon, but possible some kind of daggers, sniper rifle, scepter or maybe even a combination of all 3.
I think I need to add a bit more chunk and a bit more ugly. Will get to doing some more thumbs tonight to get shape and form before I get with the detailing.

lovely rita, meter maid... ahem.
hey casey! hope all's going well in melbourne. i assumed that popawheelie might be a co-worker of yours, and i prove correct.
all i can say at this stage is that i'm glad to see you've posted some art to kick off with, but that you should also go on to do some thumbnails. i think it's okay to stick with the wide and venerable milieu of 'brutal alien chick' so why don't you just start with a basic female-ish silhouette, copy it about 12 times, and then start modifying both the silhouette in black, and then trying out different costume arrangements in white, much as you've thumbnailed above. i think it'd be a quick and easy way to explore some options you wouldn't otherwise consider.

Ninjas: Thanks dude, I'll do my best to get some leet concepts up worthy of rivaling yours.
popawheelie: I've already replied to you in your WIP thread :P
gauss: I don't actually know popawheelie, so you prove incorrect. But you're on the money about the thumbnails, which is what I'm working on now with no real success. But I'll keep fighting until I find something I'm happy with. Good to see that you're keeping a close eye on the contest's proceedings, and will look forward to more comments from you when I get some decent concepts up.

Just some thumbs I did last night, I'm partially liking the head on the dude in the bottom right. Still need more development... More thumbs to come.

Gav: I might try a few more thumbnails to expand on that tall and lanky guy and see what I come up with.
shinja: I sussed out your entry over at 3D Total, looking really nice man. Pitty we couldn't keep you here at Polycount, especially with that entry!
rooster: Thanks for the kind words dude, I think each thumbnail has a certain element that I like. So eventually I'll just rip it apart and use bits that I like to make a super character of awesome thumbnail goodness.
Eagle: Yeah, I'm starting to get places with these thumbs and having a clearer picture of what I want to make.
Here's a bunch of scribbles I just finished during my lunchbreak:

EDIT:
ninjaPenguin3d: Missed your reply. Well seeing as there is more than one of you who like the tall lanky thumbnail, I'll give that a go tonight and see what I can do with it.

seforin: Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I totally want my character to have a huge gun. But I'm leaning towards a sniper rifle of some kind like the one in my last sketch on the right. But if I opt for a large gun, it'll be a cannon of epic proportions.
As for the tank idea, vehicles aren't allowed and that would probably fall under being a vehicle.
Here's another bunch of random scribbles:
After doing all these thumbs and scribbles, I have a rough idea of what I want my character to look like. So rip apart stuff I have so far. Let me know which you like and which you hate so I don't choose the wrong bits.

Great work, man. I'm really digging the latest sketches, especially the top-left helmet. I have a thing for helmets, though -- just ask EQ, he'll tell you all about his helmet.
Also, anything with spiky teeth is evil, so you've pretty much nailed that. Spikes in general, really, will get you plenty far with that. Especially if they're bone -- helps if they're breaking flesh, too.
Anywho, I think the first (top to bottom) of the two heads (not helmets) in the latest is nicer, second one just feels sort of bland. First one seems a bit more primal and sophisticated at the same time. Bear with me on the terrible descriptions.
What you might want to try, anyhow, is see what you can do do avoid a sort of casing armor like on the second head. It probably seems like there's only so many different things you can do with the armor, but I'm sure there are better options. Maybe one that melds with the back of his skull, with fleshy antennae with glowing veins following the armor out? Don't know, but think!

Hahahaha! Dude, great comments. Thanks for actually taking the time. I'll take everything you said and throw it into the next bunch of scribbles. I'm hoping to get some refined ideas by tonight.
Keep these kinds of comments coming.

random scribble of a head i did in about 20mins, might continue on this to see where it goes. I want organic bone bits to come from the scalp and some other random shit.

I like the painted head, and adding the bone, and just more evil may turn into an awesome design. Have you decided on a body for that particular head shape? I like the top left of the scibbles, something mixed with the head may be an option. Good luck.

I tried a few variations on the blue guy above, but the best thing I got out of it looked too much like the Predator. So I decided to ditch that one.
Here's a new head I came up with, one I quite like and might actually stick to it. Still needs some more refining but I like where it's headed.
Variation on the face/head:

Variation on face armour:
From the first bunch I like #5 the most and might stick with that idea, though I'll revisit it some more and work the horns a little.
From the second bunch... I only like #2, the rest are pretty shit.
I might combine the two I like and do a few more tweaks here and there and see what I can come up with. Though I'll be doing some body concepts tonight.
C&C welcome... Paintovers too if anyone has any ideas for the heads or face armour.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

Yes, I like the rough 2 and 5 of the head/face.
And I would say number 6 for the armour but it looks too much like the mouth of sauron (or at least I think)
Progress is going good. Keep truckin!

On the first sheet I like 4, the eyes make it look really menacing. People may knock it for being too generic but I think its a keeper. The cyclops stuff smooths out the forehead and takes the anger and malice away from the face. It also shapes the brow to make him look confused or "simple".
On the second sheet I really like 6. Out of all the head sketches I like this one the best. Ahh but 2 has some really good aesthetic pieces that could play out nicely also... 4 Looks cool until you think about him opening his mouth. Would the top of his head roll back because it looks like his jaw is locked in place? Teeth aren't any good if you need a straw and blender to eat your enemies. I guess he could have broken his jaw in a previous battle and needed to have his jaw held in place... still if he can't use the coppers or open his mouth it takes some of the fun out of it?
