Thanks for the quick writeup. My friends are always asking me "Woah, is that Windows?" Now I can just point them to your guide.

Your replacer seems nice, but I've always found the Neowin Patcher to be the easiest fix for uxtheme.dll. Less clicking means that you're less likely to screw something up. You can also use something like Icon Tweaker to further customize your icons.

i used this replacer because im using home editon of xp, and somehow everythime i used the neowin patcher it never worked.

yeah. icon tweaker could be cool to change some icons that are software related like .rar one.

hehe

here's a shot of the entire desk.

Looks cool man, I used to use a prog called Aston Shell (i think) a long while ago. Until I realized it was hogging about half of my system resources.

huzzah, windows rebooted gave an error message that uxtheme.dll wasn't a windows image and refused to load the shell, luckily I could reboot into safe mode with command prompt and restore the backup that way. I'm using WinXP Pro

If it's the neowin patcher, that happened to me a few times as well. I've never had any such issues with just replacing the .dll though, so if you're allready doing that, i can't help.

I used bitmap's method, afterwords I used the neowin patcher and it worked fine. I freaked because I was waiting on an important email!

Yep, no hard feelings though, I'm a computer tech by trade so as long as I can still access the data on my harddrive I'm fine. Luckily your technique made a backup of uxtheme.dll so it was a simple to fix.

The moral of this story, make a backup of uxtheme.dll if you're going to do any patches or anything and then try any method that works for you
