created web space and a dot com address?
on 05-27-2006 02:01 PM
I'm running low on free web space and I'd also like to get a simple web address to store my portfolio on, anyone know how this works? How do I register a dot com address and all that junk?

On a related question what is a good domain name for a portfolio? Would it be best to just use my full name? Or a part of it? Or something else in full?
Suppose it might not be a huge deal, but still something I've wondered about.

well, I chose something that I could tell someone and it would be easy to remember, it used to be ysgalon.com, which was way too confusing. I settled on artbyjustin.com instead of my full name because Meisse is to hard for people to remember.

I suggest www.hitlersbabyfistinginc.com
I use bluehost.com which I highly recomend. 250 gb a month of bandwidth, 5 gb storage, and they have excellent near instantaneous support. I have heard a few bad things about Dreamhost, mainly that they've grown to fast which makes for poor support and frequent downtimes, but I don't know for sure.
Recently bluehost just upgraded me to 400 gb a month transfer which was really cool. I don't pay any extra. Plus you get free domain registration for as long as you're with them.

fyi, I've never once experienced any downtime. As for support, I think it kinda depends what you need from this. Personally, I've never even needed any support, I just wanted to register a domain and some space, which Im pretty sure is all malcolm needs. I'd put you in the more advanced user bracket Ben

btw Tulkamir, yeah, just something shortish and easy to remember. Heh, I was annoyed that http://www.daz.com was already taken, cos it's bizarre and a complete waste of time, and equally irked by some probably distant American relatives and their insistance on hanging on to http://www.pattenden.com even though they've not updated their content in forever. Jeez, that kid is probably in school now.

I did some looking about because I'm interested in hosting, and some of these reviews suggest that while dreamhost are great as long as things run smoothly, they are a bit useless if something does actually go wrong: http://www.ftpplanet.com/cgi/_listreview...w.dreamhost.com

Well like I said, I use them for a portfolio site and storage space. Nothing more. Suits me fine. Never had a problem.

fair enough daz thats all I'm looking to do; but some folk in the reviews have had trouble switching their registered domain from dreamhost to another company, which is also something I might want to do

I too am with dreamhost(over a year now), and I've never had any problems at all with them. Like daz mine is just for a portfolio site and to store stuff on.

I'm using Lunarpages. I'd switch to Bluehost if I didn't sign a 2 year contract. I did a performance test with a file on Poop's site. I uploaded it to mine and compared the download speed from his host and mine. Bluehost was like 4 times faster.

I'm on Bluehost, it's pretty good although I have experienced a little downtime and sometimes slow servers... probably more often than should really be expected. They usually fix stuff up quickly though.
I read that Bluehost (and most hosts) use a sharing thing where up to 5-10 people share the same DNS or something? I don't know the technical side of it, but it appears Dreamhost don't share them, each site gets its own stuff, so it should be faster?
I might be talking nonsense though.

Okay dreamhost it is, but what does this mean? What is this 50 dollar charge I'm very confused?
Automatically rebill me:
(Even set up fees are covered by our 97 day money-back guarantee.)
once a month. ($49.95 set up fee.)
once a year. (No set up fee!)
every two years. (No set up fee, plus 20% off! Except for L0.)
Oh yeah and my name is taken obviously but there is nothing at www.malcolm.com? What a rip off. I'm thinking of going with malcolm341.com as that is my e-mail and login name for all other sites.

basically if you want to pay monthly, rather than yearly or 2-yearly, they throw in an extra charge for some reason.
most places do this, i've seen, i guess it's to encourage you to go for a full year or two rather than just a few months.

So if I pay monthly they charge me 50 bucks for the guy to change the payment method from yearly to monthly, that is a frickin' rip off. But I don't want to drop a hundred bucks at the end of the year I'd rather pay in installments. BS.

not to knock Vito's offer, but because for precious little more than the prices quoted on polycount.net , I can get an actual domain name, several gigs of storage and unlimited transfer, along with all sorts of other goodies which aren't provided there.
still, it's good if you just want somewhere quick and easy to post images and host a portfolio, I guess.

Hostrocket has been working well for me. They have a very shiny website, too.

I've been registering domains for about 8 years with www.joker.com
as for hosting, been through a few, finally settled on one that hosts for artists (I somehow get over 20k unique a month) at www.misanthrope.nu
for some reason I'm spotlighted at that site too!
