My first entry into any of these contests. This one seemed fun, so I'm game. This idea is a WIP at the moment. Hopefully I'll get the concept done tonight or tomorrow, before E3 consumes my soul.

Haha. I love it!

Some nice soft shading going on. Maybe give him a tail?

Thx for the comments Sectaurs!

Hmmm, I like the idea of the tail. I'm afraid of stealing polys from his wings though, since that's the main feature. Here's the update for the night. I'm about to go to bed. I'll mull over the tail idea some more. Perhaps I'll try a small tail that won't be too expensive. I like the balance a tail would give him.

Well, you could dedicate probably half a 512 to his wings to keep most of the detail in an alpha map, so each membrane part would only be 1-2 triangles. But yeah, tails are expensive, though I pictured your guy with a little stub of one, kind of like his horn, only fleshy. and coming out of his bum...

Looking really cool.... but you won't finish. :-D

I think next time it might be helpful to work in the color variations as you go instead of adding them at the end. It tends to not only make your placement work better since you're ballancing it with your eye as you go, but it also tends to make your color choices for shading the shadows and highlights on those areas more applicable for the materials if they were that color.

That's a good idea dude. I usually do something along those lines, but I wasn't getting enough color variation as I went along, so I "fixed" it at the end by adding the more flush areas to his cheeks and nose, belly, etc.

You can see a 3-part progression of the concept here: http://www.superostrich.net/index_2dArt.htm

UPDATE: I got the low poly finished tonight. Weighs in at 1019 triangles right now, which doesn't leave me enough for his cigarette. I think I can find a couple polys to knock out of there for it though.

Awesome work Mr.Ostrich. Taking a look at the concept, the only area I can think to reduce would be the ears, right now you have them thick, you could possibly make the thin part a flat plane. I'm sure you'll have to experiment a bit to get it right.

Steady, you mean down near the tips of the ears? Go flat at that point? I suppose that could work. The normal mapping needs to be unique for the front and back of the ears though. Not sure a flat poly would work both ways.

Hey I think I saw you post images for this one on CG Chat forums. I'm not sure if you saw my post before the site got hacked but I think you should consider making the head even bigger than it is now.

I think I may have seen that comment pre-hack, but I think I'm gonna stick with these proportions. Let's call this guy "midget demon" now instead of "super deformed."

Nice job on the zbrushing. I'm really digging the wings and the face in particular. I think his cheek jowels looked better in the concept because they are more puffy, they are a bit small in the Zbrush version.

Oh yeah, looks a bit like Colton, HAHAHAHAHAH.

Awesome zbrushing, he's turning out very well.
Wrists maybe seem a tad thick right now, though.

Very cool, I like how you aren't going over board with the detail so far, something I wish I could stop doing.

Well, it ain't gonna happen. I'm sending this from my laptop. My workstation started locking up while using Max a few days ago, and it has degraded into not being able to boot up. I can't even reinstall windows, locks up there too. I'm going out later today to buy a new hard drive, and might consider upgrading the MB/processor/RAM while I'm at it. Sorry I won't make the deadline.
