looks great for a first model...proportions look pretty solid..I could give a better critique if you showed the wireframe over the shaded model...in anycase good start

Well. The render is awful. Very hard to see. Set up your smoothing groups.
Otherwise, completely awesome for a first model. Get those things I mentioned worked out because it is really hard to judge it in it's current state.

yeah set up good smooth groups or leave it off.
instead of multiple lights/one big bright light like it looks you have set try setting the self illumination around 75%
to make a good wireframe render duplicate your model, add a Push or similar modifer and set it to .01 or so and set the material for it to wire(and color to black) and render it out
really great for a first model, and fairly fast too. though your concept is slighty more stylized than your actual output. i'd like to see a seperate model more closely matching the sketch.

do you know what smoothing groups are? they determine which polys on your model are smooth shaded and which have harsh edges. If you are using max, the smoothing groups panel is at the bottom of edit poly/mesh, and by selecting polys and clicking a smoothing goup number, all of them in the same group will be smoothed. Polys in a different group will be smoothed too, but where two different groups meet there will be a harsh edge. you can also put polys in multiple groups to get more complicated smoothing setups

i will have an improved smoothing groups shot when i get it done.
just wanted people to know im not dead lol, and im still workin on this. slowly but surely though, heh. thanks for your help :-D

Yeah. you need to set up smoothing groups and turn up the self illumination on the texture. Renders on a black background are also a no-no.
What software are you using? Oh, I see. Max. Yeah, you should make those changes ASAP

well since its your first model it's hardly inconcievable that you weren't aware of what to do. Generally you need proper smoothing set up to get a decent idea of how the texture looks, unless you crank up the self-illumination.

Never thought I'd say this but the texture's too dark.

Hey man, nice to see you finally posting! Don't take any critiques personally, the guys can seem pretty cantankerous at times, just think of it like boot camp.

Wow, great improvement! I still don't like the black background renders, and the colored lights make it harder to see the texture, but I can tell you learned a lot.

You need to use the self illumination. It is in the material editor for your material. Set it at 50 or 75%
