So here I am, getting back into modeling after moving fully across the US (CA to NC), all I want to do is take my model from Wings and drop it into Maya for rigging and animation... Problem is these little artifacts in the shading. Well, no problem, I can just selectively fix those... (Of which there's usually one per object)

Problem is, when I try to do just that, I lose the shading for the whole object.

Ideas?

Idea 1: Select crapped version of model -> Edit Polygons -> Normals -> Set Vertex Normal Options -> check "Unlock Normals" -> Apply

Idea 2: Instead of using Average Normals, select edges around offending poly -> Edit Polygons -> Normals -> Soften/Harden Options -> click "All Soft" -> Apply
