And it's nothing like pixel art either.
Pixel art is more than just using pixelated brushes.
I suggest having a look at these tutorials:

Also, if you made your own avatar, i suggest saving it as a .gif, instead of a .jpg.
Chances are that it may even be smaller in filesize, and it will definately look loads better.
