I can't belive this thing is in my portfolio! UHG Time for a new one!

Please post your old vs new stuff!

Ahah cool. Probably a bit unfair to compare low poly to high....

Generic female base mesh. 3ds Max2. Shit must have been, ooh about 98 or 99 I guess? Low poly or not, whassup with the absurdly narrow waste, too short arms, the bizarre default pose with massive spinal curvature and sticky out head? Painful.

Generic female base mesh. Maya. In progress

I think we should limit this to models in the same poly range, of course a hipoly model is going to look a lot better than a 150 tri model...

I usually can't contribute to these kind of posts but I actually happen to have a comparison of a model I was redoing for my reel. Not finished but you can see where I started out when I was stoked on lower poly counts, the industry is moving so quickly now I figure why bother with low res at home when I do it all day at work, it just means my artwork will be outdated by the time I finally get my ill fated portfolio together.

There is no 'of course' about it. Plenty of scope for a high poly model to look really shit actually. More so than a low poly. This isn't the moment for me to explain why, but it should be obvious.

Up to n30g3n3s1s since its his thread. Im happy to go along with the rule If enforced.

Sett: that first render makes me chuckle. Love the final image.

EQ: Nice high poly gun man. Im building one myself right now and its a bitch.

You ever finish that car with some nice HDRI renders malcolm?

quite a funny one for me , the right is 2000 , in 3d max ... the laft 2 are may this year , maya... not much improvement maybe if i still had the wires it would be more obvious , the 2000 model was really high poly in all the wrong places ...

Lookin good guys! Some extreme improvements over all. Its fun to watch the people around you grow

Daz: Blah rules? were all friends here we dont need any strict/harsh rules. Also you can still see quality no matter if it is a low or high poly model and i see improvements in your highpoly vs your low poly. I keep meaning to get started on some highpoly stuff myself but i keep getting cought up in modwork/other personal projects.

DaZ that is killer improvement; I think the comparision on low poly to high in this case is fine because the proportionnal improvements alone are great.

Daz, I'm putting that car off until I've finished the other pieces for my portfolio, modeling that thing is extremely tedius, modeling the wheels was so much fun and then everything else is painful beveled edges on door handles.

Thermidor, is that guy Invid or Zentrotty, he looks familiar but I can't place the season.

My first MOD stuff, a Gundam DOOM MOD that I made somewhere in 1994 with PovRay (DOS modelling and raycaster render app):

And here the same Gundam mech (as the top pic) but then made with 3DS Max 3 sometime 2 years ago for Gundam Universe Q3 MOD. Not a great model and skin when I look at it now but I did improve a little bit since '94

Textures only, the brighter ones are from about a month ago...the others are from a year ago. Good amount of improvement I'd have to say.
