HI!
I've been playing some old playstation1 games lately (especially since the board was down!) but I have a few things to ask to the oldschool gamers here...
I don't have a ps anymore (I sold it years ago in order to by a PC to try out digital imaging ) but the emulators are now good enough to run almost any game from this system. My problem is that I simply don't know which game to pick at the second-hand store!
I actually sold the console just before the 'final' 1999/2000 game release wave hence i've missed things like Gran Turismo1, Syphon Filter, MGS and many others
So, what do you recommend? My personnal fav games have been FinalDoom, Tekken2, Tobal#1 and Wipeout so far. Now I'm trying my hand at Wipeout2097, Vagrant Story and Tekken3 and I must say I'm hooked
Hmmm this ranking souds like a nice place to start... What do you think?

Each and every genre accepted ; the main thing is replay value... and graphics
Thanks!!

ChronoCross - Squaresoft RPG with 30 playable characters, so there is plenty of reply value
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - just play this

RC Stunt Copter - the hardest game ever.
Devil Dice - great puzzler.
Castlevania - don't ask, just play
Rollcage - great if you like wipeout. Same developers.

Tenchu 1 & 2- not as pretty to look at as MGS, still fabulous games though, every game should have inflatable decoy ninjas..
Tony Hawks 2
Metal Gear Solid - fantastic game while it lasts, maybe not much replay value but still a classic that everyone should play.
Gran Turismo2 - Fantastic, and I don't even like racing games much.
Syphon Filter
Tekken3 - This still gets dusted off for drunken weekend team battles at least once a month..

I have to second this, just because it's so rarely heard. The co-op in this game is among the best of all time.

Woo woo, new games suggestions!
You guys are great
Been playing ridge racer type4 lately, neat racing game. I've also grabbed tenchu2 but had no chance to really dig into this one yet tho.
Thanks!

Oh, more good ones I forgot, "Rival Schools", mentalist jap beat 'em up..

G- Police, one of the few games that ever made me feel physically ill. Vertigo inducing gunship fun for all the family. If you get bored with the missions you can amuse yourself by clusterbombing civilians for a bit..

Colony Wars : Vengeance, very enjoyable space shooter.

Edit: "Hogs of War"! can't believe I forgot that, excellent multiplayer fun with a few mates and some beers..

Ooooo I got some for ya!
Xenogears-best damn RPG on the system, if ever.
Castlevania:SotN-already mentioned
Front Mission 3- turn based squad combat, with MECHS!!
Ghost in the Shell-fun arcade shooter with a tank that can climb walls!
Breath of Fire 3 (or was it 4?)-just a really nicely done RPG
Vagrant Story-you already know, tis an awesome dark rpg
Soul Reaver-great except for the block moving puzzles
FF Tactics-nuff said
FF7-9 were quite strong as well.

Hmmm, well I havn't had played any of these games for ages, but from what I remember they're fun.
The Tenchu series (Nothing like being a ninja)
Tomba and Tomba 2
The Unholy War (Strangely fun)
Legend of Dragoon
Bushido Blade 1 & 2 (by far my favorite sword fighting game series)
Front Mission 3
Parasite Eve 1&2
Soulblade (Title that's now the Soul Calibur series)
Medievil and Medievil 2 (Pure style, I loved these games)
that should last you a bit if you choose to play any of them

I hate to say it but I never actualy got into the original playstation
I was one of those dolts who thought it would never make it far and it would disapere like so many systems befor it
(boy was I wrong)
So only when the PS2 came out did I actualy ever play any of the PS1 games
Tho I am more of a PC player myself
I'm going to go do something productive. I'm gonna go watch television.

I forgot to mention Einhander. Side scrolling mayhem at its best in the same vein as R-Type or Gradius.

Colony Wars, as Scott said, is a great space-shooter/sim.
One of my favortie PS1 games was called "IQ". It's a puzzle game, and gets very hard, very fast
