[Riot Art Contest] - Kayle and Morgana

Hi all! New to polycount and forums in general, not sure if I'm doing this right...

Here's my progress thread for the Riot art contest, Kayle and Morgana's final showdown.

The story I want to tell is the final (after the league) battle between Morgana and Kayle. Kayle is struck down, and prepares herself for the final blow, but something surprises her. Morgana hesitates! In conflict with herself after so many years in the league killing Kayle over and over again, Morgana thought she would have become numb to the sensation but when it came down to the final confrontation, she felt an unexpected stirring. Can she bring herself to kill her own sister? It's now or never! Kayle is vulnerable, and nobody is going to stop her, will she deal the final blow?? Or will she hesitate, and let Kayle escape? Did her numerous battles in the League actually manage to quench her hatred?? What is this even?? xD

And equally importantly, will Kayle see Morgana's hesitation as a sign that there is still goodness in her, and forgive her, or will she take the opening and use it to her advantage?

I started before my account was activated so here's my progress so far.

First the rough concept sketch

Then the composition line work.

Trying something different with the composition, not sure if it is going to work after it's been shaded xD I liked the swirly composition because it feels claustrophobic and high tension. Kayle is bound and practically defeated, but i didn't want to put her in the background because despite her helplessness, she can still potentially overwhelm Morgana. Hopefully, if I pull it off, I won't lose focus on Morgana either.

First time painting using line art (before I've always gone straight into blocking with colour) so hopefully this will turn out ok.

Line work complete! Now onto the colour/shading. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to pin down the values first or the colours first...or both...or none

Not too happy with the volume of Kayles armor.
I've always had trouble getting things to feel 3d and solid, but not too sure what I'm doing wrong

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Oh, also flopped it! Haven't decided which direction I want them facing yet. Also made Morgana bigger, but I think I might prefer her smaller like in the previous version xO decisions!!!

Strong composition, I´d give it a bit more space to the left, so that she doesn´t feel too squeezed in, and even maybe top and bot.

Value passes and slight canvas adjustment thanks to 237DOT.

Also just noticed that the floor behind Kayle's head is not lining up with the rest of the scene. Kayle's left wing is going to be a beeyotch to detail xD
Will see how it goes.

Gonna have to play around some with the second light source coming from Kayle's hand (she's got a reckoning starting up there).

This is looking pretty awesome! I really like how Morgana is turning out. Only suggestion is that when you start rendering some of Kayle's feathers, I'd loose some of the detail because as of now, there's a bit too much going on and not enough breathing room, which makes it difficult for the eye to rest in certain areas. I hope that make sense. :x Keep up the good work!

Refined the value pass but still not 100% happy with how it looks as a thumbnail.

So I zoomed out to 10% and reevaluated the light and dark areas. A bit better. Going to play around with the colour next.

Wow! The rendering is coming along nicely! Especially Kayle's armor, but I would suggest you add a little bit of texture to it, like scratches, marks, etc, so it looks more like armor instead of plastic. ^^

Thanks! I'm gonna do all the detailing at the end when I have the shading, colours and lighting locked down. That's my favorite part! x)

Still wanna play around a bit more with the shadows and fix the anatomy on the wings.

Ok, feathers first after all. Still need to work on them a lot more, hopefully will get around to it during the detailing...

Made the colours a bit cooler. Not sure if I like it or not.

maybe just in the middle of the cooler and the warmer one if you can hit that sweet spot. The cooler one I think is just a little too desaturated. I like the idea that she may be warm or glowing considering her ultimate is like an impenatrable shield of light.

Looking great! Would be geat to sees ome texture on the armor, a bit of wear and tear and such. I can assume that those details come later on anyway. I love the competition. Definately one of the more dynamic pieces in the contest.

I like it, great job! At this point I think you could try playing with more interesting spell and environment effects. Don't go overboard of course, but I think a little more wouldn't hurt to try. Morgana's magic looks a little weak compared to her pose and action. Good luck!

Thanks! I'll give it a shot. Her one spell is the stun that she casts on Kayle. I'll see what I can do with the other one. Was a bit worried that the high contrast spell might mess with the composition though, will see what I can do

Made the effects more pronounced, added a bit more detail in mostly unnoticeable areas xP

Trying a lighter redder version vs darker bluer option.
