Great job so far.
But I do think you are losing some of that cosiness feeling you have in the original, because you have made it longer. In the original everything is squashed together giving it a pleasant feel to it.
I'm really looking forward to the end result.

If the roof is corrugated metal, you might want to include the seams between sheets. Adding some grime in the 'valleys' would also help.

Its looking nice, but I really miss a palm , and the sign is nearly not readable.
If you put a little stronger AO behind so it separates better from the background, id be a lot easier to read, both colors have nearly the same value and the shape of the text is pretty noisy at a distance , and a couple more sides for the surfboards wouldn't have hurt ; )

thanks Shrike, I see that is text is not standing out the way it should. I fixed it by by playing with material and deleting light that killed the shadow behind. i hope you enjoy the changes.
