My Indie MMO - Legends of Firestorm

Hi everyone! I've been a bit quiet recently because I've been working hard on an indie game with with my friend Peter Nicholls.

It's an action MMO and we hope to support up to 1000 players per server in a giant world, the gameplays still rough but it's starting to shape up and now we're ready to show the world!

Threw in £23 / $35-ish as a giant "fuck you" to Diablo 3. Plus the art style is nice.

Man indie MMO sounds like an oxymoron. lol. Sounds completely impossible for 2 people, but I would love it if you could prove me wrong! Looks really cool so far, I'm surprised you have so much art already great job!

Yeah it's pretty daunting sometimes but we're definitely going to finish it, actually it's basically there and in terms of core tech we just need to finish quests. Of course there's more characters monsters items etc and just general polish after that but it feels like there's an end now and I'm really pleased how it's turning out. All that time spent on q2pmp and early polycount when I should have been doing homework is paying off!!

It's really nice having it complete enough to show off and not sound totally crazy, glad you like it.

Cool! I thought you were nuts when you told me you quit your dayjob to work on an indie MMO. This looks awesome, especially considering its just two dudes, lol wut.

Im digging the art style! Really love how everything fits together.

Also, I assume the world will be far larger than it appears in the video you posted?

Shrogg yeah its going to be huge! We've got a kind of procedural/manual hybrid authoring system and the tech supports worlds up to 128x128km, I looked it up that's about the same size as Jamaica. In practice we'll only use what we need to make it fun but that will leave lots of room for expansion in the future.
The world layout in the video is quite compressed to try and show off all the variation and keep it interesting in short period of time.

We've got a bunch of interconnecting tiles that fit together with rules to connect them and then I can paint the layout using the hex value of pixels with roads, rivers, towns or whatever in a PNG. There's also manual override in the map tool if I need an exact tile or orientation.

I wrote a little article about making one of the monsters with some work in progress shots of the sculpt and trying to go over the thought processes at every step to minimise wasted time.

Hey, so the kickstarter we tried to do in the early part of the thread didn't work out but we didn't give up on this. We refocused and spent the time getting the game playable and are now trying to get more people playing and gather feedback. I'll stick a few pictures below then the links to the build that will be running this weekend (or untill we find any server crashing bugs). If you manage to play we would love to hear any feedback you have or any issues you hit. Hope you enjoy;
