Models for my first project with a team

Hello fellow polycounters, i just joined a team who who work on a great project: a spiritual successor to the star wars battlefront series in Cryengine3.
Ok, less talk, more art, the first model i'm doing for this project is a GONK droid, here's the AO render and the high poly in viewport:

Any critiques, comments, feedbacks? I plan on doing the low-poly really soon and the baking process, it will be my first time :poly142:. If you need any close-ups pictures or wireframes, let me know

Looks funny : )
try to bake the legs seperate, or you will probaply get errors or the side or get completely dark with the AOmap.

Thank you, by baking the legs seperate, you mean that the legs have their own texture or it is has to be a seperate geometry when i bake?

When baking just hide one highpoly leg then the other, combine results with PS.
otherwise the AO will be black between the legs : )

I am so happy i finally did my first bake! I'm pretty happy with the result, need some tweaking on some parts but that's good, the video of the turntable is available only in that link:

Bake with a projection cage

There's no cage in XSI i think. I used the one from Xnormal.

You can export a copy of your lowpoly which you've extruded/pushed outwards to simulate max's projection cage and use that in xnormal.

Or yeah, use the one from inside xnormal. Make sure you save the cage once you've edited it in the viewer, and make sure you check "use cage" in your lowpoly mesh settings.

Hm. And your cage is pushed outwards enough to fully surround both high and low poly mesh?

Also, when you preview the normal map in xnormal's viewer, does it still look like that?

Look okay to me. Are you exporting FBX from XSI? And into Marmoset? Make sure you use a format capable of exporting your tangent/birnormal basis.

It still looks like something's wrong with your cage, though.

Not sure if you still have the edge issue, it might be your vertex normals for that area, are the shading issues only there when the normal map is applied? I'm not sure where the problem edges are on the uv layout for your normal map. The last render you showed seems like the problem was fixed? If so what was it?

I redid a low poly in 3ds max with a correct setup (with layer: High, low, cage), did a better unwrap and baked it again. So there's no more edge issue

I always love the simplicity and retro look of the drones in star wars, will keep an eye on this thread, so far you got a clean bake and a solid lp, waiting to see more
