created OT: Food/Drink at the desk...
on 06-13-2012 04:09 AM
I swear to God... If I ever have a drink in my hand and I'm near the PC, it MUST, without fail, go all over the blody keyboard... I think I must have done this no less than 30 times, yet do I learn? Do I bugger... I've gone through so many expensive mice and keyboards now lol...
Is it just me, or are there any other random droppers (heh) here?

I don't really drop, but I knock over.
I permanently have both a tall glass of water, and a cup of coffee off to my right hand side (left handed so it's well out of my way), out of the way of my keyboard, and the PC tower (sits on top of the desk). And I drink and put it back on my right hand side.
But I sometimes drink, and get distracted, and put it down on the layout pad in front of me, also a permanent feature on my desk. And then, I'll reach for my keyboard without looking down, or reach for my flash drive or something, and spill my drink (either coffee or water) or on Fridays, spill my beer. Nothing worse than spilling beer all over your keyboard.

Ive only ever gotten coffee into my keyboard once but that's because of the goddamn headphone cable. In fact. Everytime i stand up from my desk my headphones fly across the room.

I actually only did this once, in all my years. I have always been careful to place the cup/glass between keyboard and screen and to the side, so even if hit it, it won't go anywhere important.

Switch from beer to whiskey, the glass is shorter so it's harder to knock over.

I think Lambert is onto something. You could make it even safer by keeping the beer in cans until you're ready to drink. To ensure you never spill just shotgun them all. Problem solved!

When I was working at Frontier, I accidentally knocked a pint glass of water over my neighbour's computer tower.
Everybody in the office went 'Wheeeyyyyyyyyy' simultaneously. I'd have done the same

Remember, the drink never fell in the first place, it was you touching it and in reflex trying to save it from a fall ending up hitting it and spreading it all over the keyboard.

I knocked a can of Irn Bru (orange fizzy drink made from who knows what) over my Amiga 1200 when I was 14. I had done a year of paper rounds to pay for it! After a panic I took the cover off, dried it with toilet paper and it STILL WORKED! They knew how to build hard ware back then!

I drink tea like a gent - Back straight, arm extended. Correct posture for maximum sippage, and minimum spillage.
What-oh!
Actually. The worst spillage I've had in recent years if having half my damn biscuit (Translation: Cookie, for Americans) fall off and land in my tea. The splash hit both my keyboard and PC tower, somehow, but there was no damage. Just more deliciousness.

Yes, this.
Use these if you drop drinks often:
thorough cleaning is a must after each use.
It's like the grown up version of the babies bottle, but hey I don't give a.
Saves your keyboard and other accessories.
Push in the keyboard draw when eating drinking, saves from repeated cleaning of the keyboard/mouse.

Ive never spilled anything on my desk. Always keep it far away anyways.
Also, I bought wireless headphones recently. Sennheiser RS170
Soooooo worth it. I had no idea how much i fiddled with that bloody cord till I got them.

I eat and drink at my desk a lot and I've never spilled any liquid on my keyboard/computer or anything. I'm pretty lucky I guess.
On the subject of headphones, yeah, I tend to yank the cord out a lot and send my headphones to the floor or sit on them or something all the time. I go through so many pairs. I tried to get wireless ones, but the ones I've tried in my price range have terrible sound quality.

I have this keyboard and it's paid for itself 5 times. However i don't use it anymore because if you make an (even mildly) unclean keystroke, it wont pick it up. Gets annoying and slows you if you're in the zone on your projects. But its indestructible(for a keyboard)...

The last time I had a bad spill was a few years ago when I was carrying a bowl of cereal and tripped. The milk flew all over my TV, speakers and Xbox. It didn't do any damage but it was a dick to clean up.

I used to have Degus, and I would let them run about on my desk. As soon as I turned my back for more than two seconds, they would mount they keyboard and start pissing. Little bastards!
