Just wondering if anyone has encountered this golden nugget.

Doing a copy skin weights + paste from one mesh to another seems to break the max influences of the skin.

eg if your copying to a mesh and youve just bound its skin with max influences of 2 joints, for some reason after youve copied weights from another model the skin will now have some rogue verts with more than 2 influences.

This isnt just a simple pruning issue either, any ideas of a work around? Im at my wits end trying to find a solution that doesn't involve tweaking each offending vert by hand =/

Hey Flynny! You probably gave up on this thread, But I've been experiencing a lot of issues with the copy tool as well. And its only Maya 2014. If i bring my model back in 2012, everything works like a charm. The issue I get is that some influence is just plainly not respected. Both meshes are the same and have the same amount of verities yet, it doesn't copy all the weights.

Did you ever find a solution to your problem?
